New Guy here.

Re: New Guy here.

I was looking at https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/custom-5 and the custom 5 is actually called 'SH-14' could this be the precursor to this pickup?

Bro, did you even read my response?

What you have IS a Custom 5, just made before the SH-14 was officially a production pickup. If the guitars were made in 2002, then this is even more likely the case, because that's around the time that the SH-14 became an official part of the SD catalog and they switched over to the more current style of labeling/stickers.

All of the "Custom" winds are the same coils, just different magnets. So, a "Custom Custom" or "CC" with an Alnico V magnet is exactly the same pickup as a "Custom 5"

I think Masta’C nailed it.

Thank you :)

Re: New Guy here.

One more question, if I may. I have a 'Duncan Custom Trembucker TB-5' in my guitar now. Are the physical dimensions of the magnets the same in a trembucker as they are in an SH pickup? if so, I would like to try the Alnico 5 magnet in this pickup. Something tells me the SH is probably going to be shorter.

Edit: These 2 pickups have close to the same name.
1) Custom 5 = custom, custom, custom = SH-14
2) Duncan Custom = SH-5

Re: New Guy here.

yes, the magnets are the same size

sh5 = custom = ceramic magnet
sh14= c5 = custom custom custom = alnico 5 magnet
sh11= custom custom (cc) = alnico 2 magnet

all the same coils, just with different magnets. all three sound great depending on what you want

Re: New Guy here.

I sold this guitar not long ago, this one has a sticker that says TB-14, (I thought it was an SH). I have a recording of this guitar that I did with just an iPhone I may post. This pickup seems to have a lot of expression to it. It is warm but lacks the articulation that the TB-5 has.

Re: New Guy here.

This is the one I kept that has the TB-5 in it. Both from the same batch out of Chushin Gaki

New Guy here.

One new question; has anyone ever put an A8 in a “custom” wound pickup? Is there already a pickup with this configuration? I did a search for “A8 and Alnico 8” but nothing came up? How many different places sell magnets? Are some vendors magnets better than others? Where is the best place to purchase magnets?

Thanks in advance.

It’s referred to as the “C8” here. Lots have tried it.

Re: New Guy here.

How did it turn out? Did people like it? Where can I get the A8 magnet?

Re: New Guy here.

The C8 is actually an amazing sounding pup. My personal favorite of all the Customs, and is magic in an SG or SG-type guitar.

Is there a huge difference in the A5 & A8? Also, I have found Magnets on eBay but who knows what you are getting on eBay. Can I get the magnet straight from SD so I know I’m getting the right magnet with SD quality?

Dude - those guitars a Chushin Crappy. TOTAL counterfeits. Worthless cheap copies. I feel for you, in that you got totally ripped off. The "fake" Duncan was just the first sign. Tell you what - since you are new, and we kinds like you, I'll buy that from you for two - fifty, and let you recoup some of your losses. It happens man. Live and learn.

Seriously man, two-fiddy. I'm generous like that.

New Guy here.

You never know. I had a USA mahogany Jackson JJP, only about 50 made and I gave it away. It only had one humbucker. I tried to sell it and no one would give me anything for it, so I donated it to the Toby Keith foundation. When kids are in cancer treatment it gives the parents a place to stay, clean sheets, meals, etc. I check on google to see where it ended up but so far it hasn’t surfaced. It’s a shame Toby met one of my guitars and never met me, lol.

Re: New Guy here.

The only way I know to get a magnet from Duncan is to buy a pickup with it.
I lurked around and found a SD page for custom Shop Pickups. I emailed and asked if I could purchase one from the factory. I thought I saw a magnet on StewMac but I would still want to get one from SD. I also found a page on here that showed the steps for replacing the magnet. Do factory pickups have wax in them?

Most do. The Antiquity and Seth Lover don't, for instance. Usually the description on the individual page will tell you.

If I disturb the wax, will that have an effect on feedback or some other problem?

Some people re-pot them. I didn't, and I never had issues with squealing. But I don't use a ton of gain and volume, either.

Re: New Guy here.

As long as I have been playing, I am pretty happy with my rig. JCM800 with Sovtek EL34s, running in a cabinet with vintage 30s. I’m so close to perfect but there’s always that little bit of tweak that makes you curious.
