New Hendrix pickups?

What's the difference between the SSL-1s, Antiquities, and the these new Hendrix pickups? I'd figure they should all get you into that Hendrix ballpark, no?

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

Funny, I was recently wondering the same thing.

From ProAudioLand:

"...while they are a tad bit hotter than ‘60s stock Strat pickups, they remain vintage by today’s output standards...the biggest difference between this set apart from a typical set of vintage Strat pickups are the magnet poles. Specifically, they feature a reverse magnet stagger in order to capture the effect of playing a right-handed guitar upside down and restrung for a lefty -- the way Jimi himself did it... a slightly new spin on the vintage Strat sound."

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

I haven't tried the Hendrix pickups, but the SSL-1 is like a late 50s fender sound, the Surfer II is an early-to-mid 60s sound, and I would guess that the new Hendrix set would be like the late 60s. The big question for me is 'What is the difference between the Hendrix set and the Psychedelic set?'

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

psychedelic strat are pe wire, sub 6k, normal stagger and custom shop. the hendrix pups are based on a set that seymour made for jimi in the late 60's which are just over 6k, looks like formvar from the pics, reverse stagger and non-cs. i havent heard them but seems like theyd be similar in some ways but still different enough. in theory the psychedelic set should be machine wound if it is period correct

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

SSL = late '50's
Surfers = Mid '60's
Hendrix = Late '60's

I love Duncans of course, but I can't help thinking you can get the same sound with a set of Fender CS '69's

I always thought SSL-1 to be late 60's style pickup Hendrix used as well. It sounds just like that. Way too scooped for 50's tone in my opinion.

The wire and output are "59" but they are more scooped that others aimed at the same area.

ssl1 isnt modeled after any particular year as far as i know. the surfers sound a lot like the pups in the '62/63 strats ive played and heard. the psychedelic strat pups are similar to the fender 69, the hendrix seem a little different as i said before

Wound 5-15% hotter (iirc fender wound em a bit colder than published spec?), reverse stagger, different color fibre

Hmmm...probably? Reverse stagger might have some surprising effects though

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

different wire too. pe for the 69 and psychedelic and looks like formvar on the hendrix from the pics

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

As far as I know:

Hendrix: Exact pickups Seymour "wound" for Jimi with reverse stagger

Psychedelics: Late 60s grey bobbin pickups that would be found stock in a late 60s strat.

Seems to me that psychs differ from CS 69 in that they're wound in the Custom Shop and are slightly warmer from demos and first hand experiences/posts. If you don't want the upcharge, just go with CS 69s. Lollars are great too.

I would agree completely, but you have to laugh at the description on the website.

"We build this pickup exactly as they did in the old days for all the chime and bell tone enjoyed by Stratocaster players in the 50s."

Re: New Hendrix pickups?

Until companies take into account modern strat string spacing for the neck pickup polepieces, and modern string gauges for the magnet stagger, I don't really care what new single coil set they come out with. I am tired of dealing with those two problems.
