Thanks but let me tell you why I had those problems. I was scratching around on my guitar and put those riffs together, then recorded it so I could see if I could solo over it. A few minutes later when I got the skeleton of the solo together I went ahead and recorded the ideas.

Here is the funny part. It was kind of difficult to play on subsequent attempts so I exported the original recording as is. I need to go back and practice it to get it down.

This is a problem I have lately because when I think I'm on to something it ends up being to difficult to repeat so I have to practice it before I can proceed further. Most of the time I get lazy and dont practice or don't spend time developing the ideas. Like the rhythm, I can improve it a lot but I get lazy. This time I want to follow through with the whole composition but I need some help. That is for another thread.

although no one ever agrees with me on this, I think things sometimes sound better when they are a bit loose. that right-after-you-made-it-up feel. I've recorded quick stuff that had a cool vibe, and later went back to try and do it neater and it lost all the emotion.

I guess that is what distinguishes an amateur from a professional since professionals can pull it off without a hitch time and time again. Amateurs like me have to practice our own stuff in order to attempt doing the same thing again! That seems to be the case with all of my ideas, they are all above my head. I try to scale my ideas down but the solos sound insincere. My skill don't match my ambitions. Thanks for listening to my stuff.

I used a PreSonus Blue Tube mic preamp for the first time when recording this. I actually dont know how to correctly use a mic preamp so please give me some tips on micing up.

I agree. The rhythm part behind the solo is ok but the rest of it could be developed a great deal. Although I spent very little time developing the whole thing I spent more time developing the skeleton for the solo.

Therein lies my problem. Solos seem easier to develop once I find a direction to take it. I have a hard time developing rhythms for 2 reasons mainly. First is that I always end up with 10 versions of every riff. My fingers always want to play in C or G maj for some reason too.

The second problem is it's hard to make a nice rhythm to solo over. If there is too much to it then it takes away from the solo. If the chords change too much then I can't rest on notes for very long.

I have no formal training because I am 100% self taught. Composition is a struggle for me which is why I post my feedble jams to solicit insight from the more experienced.

If a teacher broke down the basic ideas of creating interesting rhythms and rhythms behind the solos then what is the method? How does one become a great rhythm guitarist?

Cool riff ideas, but the rythm tone is really muffled.

The solos are cool, as mentioned they have a kinda later era Death feel/sound about them but oddly I also get a Def Leppard feel from them too.

Thanks for listening. Now that I listen to it again the rhythm does kind of dark. Someone told me it was muddy, then you said muffled. I think that is probably due to my palm muting technique which needs improvement. I recorded this kind of on the spot so it's very rough. Let me have another go at it and let me know what you think when I post the update.

No, it's not that. Try turning up the treble.

Did you record it using the bridge pickup? It sounds like a neck pickup, with the tone rolled back.

I used the bridge pickup, but I had the low mids boosted for the rhythm and high mids boosted for the solo. Maybe I should have done it the other way?

No the solo tone sounded good. I'd have used the same tone for both, but with the reverb/delay/whatever turned off for the rythm tracks.

Hi again UberMetalDude. I think Diocletian is correct. You need a bit more treble, and presence. Maybe try a different mic'ing technique also. I like to put mine pointed right at the dust cap (although others usually don't) make sure the mic is right up to the grille cloth (about half inch away). But as I said, the clip was real cool!

Thanks for listening. I mic up at the top right middle of the speaker cap. It's too bassy farther from the center so I keep it fairly less than halfway from the center. I dont know if this is correct but it seems to be the most common.
