New magnets for JB and Jazz set?

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forums, but I have been reading them for a while now. You have some pretty interesting stuff on here. What I would really like to know is what would be the magnet to angry up the Jazz, or is there even one that would do that? It is a really smooth pickup... I guess the JB is too and that's what makes that set so versatile. I just want to give it more teeth. I think that I'm settled on the A8 for the JB from what I've heard and read here.

I think I'll get what I want with the JB8, but even a little more ornery Jazz would sound nicer.

Thanks for your help.

Ceramic. I have a JB and 59' set that I replaced the alnicos with ceramics and they both sound much better for metal and high gain stuff. They do sound meaner! IMO alnicos are more for lighter styles of music. Ceramics are for metal doods who like an aggressive pickup sound. They have more crunch and sustain, but alnicos do sound prettier though if that's your thing. The A8 I guess would be like the middle of the road between the two because it's a more powerful sounding alnico, but still not as much as a ceramic.

BTW, Duluth is fookin awesome, I visit every once in a while. I really like that Fitger's brew pub, excellent micro brew! Cheers.

welcome, and cool avatar bro! i agree with tse, if you want a more agressive sound ceramics would be the way to go. however, the jazz is a very bright pickup already, and a ceramic might be overkill with that pickup? who knows, you may very well be the first to try it if you, er, try it.:) personally, i'm not crazy about the jazz, especially for a more aggressive sound. something like a '59 or pearly gates would do much better at that.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I think you're probably right about not being able to make the Jazz a more aggressive pickup, and adding a strong magnet might give me more of what I don't want... and a stronger bland Jazz. I think I'll get an A8 for my JB and try to trade the Jazz for a pearly gates or something.

I'll guess I'll do that and see how it goes. I'll let you know.

Hopefully it goes well...:nervous:

I put a Al2 in my Jazz neck and although I do think it sounds nice, it's more of a Santana woman tone.

I wouldn't call "aggressive", but a full-charged rough cast A4 bar can work wonders with a JazzN. My best soaring lead tone Santana-style comes from this p'up. I really don't need any more "aggression" to fill my every need of a neck p'up.

Re: New magnets for JB and Jazz set?

A friend of mine dropped a ceramic in a jazz once and we had a hard time hearing much of a real difference in the quality of tone, It did sound a little nastier for solos but not much more. I just like the jazz for the neck for the cleans and it's clarity. If you want a little nastier tone you could always try a JB in the neck, I've done that in the past and I loved it, you really do have to back it off the strings though.

A regular ceramic in a JB would put you between a JB and DD. For the Jazz a ceramic might help. Ceramics have a good upper mid bite which is great for an aggressive tone.
