New Marshall amps due out soon!

You guys remember the Mitch Kolby incident with Vox and someone knocking the Valvetronix? Well on another forum Mitch dropped a bomb. Here's the news:

"Good morning!

This is the beginning of a hand wired series of Marshall replica products. Each one has been carefully copied including tone, cosmetics, construction, and components (including carefully redesigned and selected transformers, caps & resistors). Cabinets are birch ply including backs, metal handles, S&P grill cloth and hand soldered speakers.

1959HW – hand wired replica of a circa 1967 Super Lead. Check out the schematic in “the History of Marshall” of the Super Lead from 1967, add a 100pf cap across the Volume control of Channel 1 and you are there. Large transformers.

20 watt Lead and Bass – hand wired replica. Also available is a 2x12 cabinet that looks like the old 4x10. Looks very cool with S&P grill and sounds great with the G12H30s.

18 watt combo – 1x12 version with a newly redesigned aged 20 watt Greenback. New grill cloth that more closely replicates (relative to the stuff we use on the current reissues) the look of the old “rubbery” grill. Sounds “the business”. 1x12 extension cab with the 20 watt Greenback.

Pricing will be competitive with “boutique” copy amps.

Marshall 1960 A and B cabs will also come with G12H30s"

Here is a link to the thread over at PP: http://vintageamps.com/PlexiPalaceUBBcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=008425

So what do you guys think?

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

Sounds good, if the construction is what it should be.

In other words, I'll reserve judgement 'til I actually hear/see them.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

The pricing I think will be a little absurd for marshall to be able to this. Also I think they are doing too little too late. Their are plenty of people who make marshall clones at very affordable prices. They may not have the Marshall emblem but they will sure do the job.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

I'm 95% sure they'll use some cheezy xformers...I'd be VERY VERY surprised if Marshall ever come with a FAITHFUL replica of their original designs.

They tried to fool some with their 1959SLP and 1987 reissues, but damn! they changed the original circuit, used weak xformers...

.... from Marshall ?? Nahh. Fogged'dabawditt!

Marshall should be able to do it cheaper than any of the smaller companies by a good margin. They also have the name Marshall which no other company can name claim to, so I believe it will be wildly successful at whatever price point they put it at. If you can get a true 67 Plexi RI that says Marshall instead of Blockhead, Roccaforte, Mohave, ect you are a huge step ahead of the competition. If I had I had a choice to make assuming a plexi sound is what I wanted I would go for the Marshall ( provided they are comparable in construction )just in terms of looks and legacy. I would rather have a Harley than and Excelsior Henderson and a Chevelle instead of a Nissan ect...

I actually hope that this lowers the price of the current RI as I would snatch up another on ebay and tweak em for a couple hundy just like I did with my 1987x. If I can find a 1959 for 500-600 I would do it in a heartbeat.

I think it is cool that they are listening to the wants of their customers.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

Thank you Marshall! I'm glad to hear about this thing. They are a little late jumping on the boutique market, but cool, nonetheless. They BETTER have a 50W Plexi!
If they don't, they F'ed up BAD. Hundred P to P watts is like Chernobyl.
Glad to see they have some lower wattage one's too. I'm guessing $3000 a head,
street price.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

Better snap up any old Marshall you want NOW. As soon as these things are released
Ebay will be crawling with guys looking for P to P Marshalls.
I like 50 watt plexis/metalfronts, but a 100W Superbass is tone to the bone.
It's like a Superlead with a wider tone and less shrill highs.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

uh, mitch later admited it was an April 1 joke.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

An April Fools Joke, eh?

First, the JCM 900's, then the Mode4, now this.

They can't afford anymore jokes. :yell:

This is Mitch's Quote....

"April fools!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, this is no joke.

50 watter - someday, hopefully no in the too distant future. Unfortunately, we can only make a relativey small amount of totally hand wired amps and we are expecting that the demand will be higher than the supply for a while.

JTM100 - not a bad idea.

The Superlead is the eary 1967 style with the larger trannies. "

This is his quote. It seems it is on. :burnout:

Another quote from Mitch

"These are totally hand wired. Take a look at an old one, then think clone. The boards look identical to the originals. High quality long lead axial components. Turret boards. Clone tranformers made by Dagnall.

Made in Jim Marshall's factory: Denbigh Road, Bletchley, Milton Keynes, MK1 1DQ England."
.
This ain't a hoax...

The original RI came out in 89 long before most boutique companies, the internet, and all of its connection with each other.ect... As a result making a RI with standard manufacturing processes made perfect economic and manufacturing sense. I don't believe it was a scam in any way as it was more a company that did not have the connection to the public in the way it does now. (No one cared about how it was wired they just cared how it sounded. The net has changed the marketplace a great deal and you can really tap into what a specific sector wants).

While the circuit is a Metal Panel it is just a small bit of changes that puts it to Plexi specs. VHholic's stock RI clips sound better than damn near any Plexi clone I have heard so in some ways I think the bashing is a bit misplaced. I don't know a single person that has had this amp blow on them, nor is there a trend that suggests it. Changing the OT definately was an improvement but the reliability of these amps is tough to beat. if you listen to Dave Bray's modded RI with no component changes it is tough to argue with how good these amps can sound. I do wish they had tweaked the circuit a bit out of the factory but it is no big deal to change. The original Marshalls had a wide variance from amp to amp as well and as a result many of the old ones are not great sounding and need some level of tweaks to get them sounding the way they should. They were not all gems and it could be said that the current RI is a much more consistant amp.

That said this sounds very cool, the high end buyer is gonna get what they want and I believe folks are gonna be real happy with the goods.

Right behind you on that one bro'.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

hehe, i thought it was cool that a company was actually listening to what its customers want just like the old days. its still kinda true though, as kev has pointed out, which is cool.

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

Marshall needs to start making amps like they used to. The mode fours are good for being valvestate but those AVT's suck horrible ass! And I've always thought the JCM2000 series was built kinda weak, too.

I'm happy with my new Mesa. :D

Re: New Marshall amps due out soon!

You're right Kevar. The fact that companies like Blockhead, Roccaforte, and Wizard
have been making far superior "real Marshalls" has bothered Marshall. They invented the damn amp, and now they want to capitalize on a picky upper market.
I still think you're better off searching the used Market for a great early Marshall, then paying to have it maintenanced once to rid itself of old components. You can pay
$1000 for that option, or wait till Marshall sells a bunch of these for $3500.
