New member and new amp

Howdy, all.

I'm new to this forum. By way of introduction, I thought I'd share some photos of my new amp. It's an RJS Amplification 6850 and it's the first one. The builder not only introduced me to the world of plexi-style sounds but he also got me introduced to the A2Pro. I put one of those in the bridge of my Charvel, where it replaced a C5. My other guitars with SD pickups are a '97 Fender Blackmore model (Quarter Pounders), a Jackson RR5 and a Jackson DK2M (both are JB/Jazz setups).

The head sounds awesome and uses a split-cathode setup on V1. There's also no master volume, so it's a LOUD 50-watt head. That said, I use a HotPlate to help protect the speakers in the 2x12 cab, which are Ipswich-built Celestion Greenbacks.

If you want to check out the builder, you can find RJS on myspace - he's got some killer clips there.

Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure:

I hope you enjoyed the pics and I look forward to participating in this forum.

Welcome to the forum! That looks like a really sweet amp and it sounds really great in those clips - very rock&roll for sure! What kind of guitars do you play?

I'm glad you liked the clips. Bobby's an absurdly great player as well as a great guitar builder and amp guy. The tunes you listened to are on his band's new CD which is coming out soon.

As for my guitars, I'm blessed to have a pretty decent little collection: 2 Groshes (a Bent Top and a Retro Classic), the Charvel, the 2 Japanese Jacksons, 2 USA Jacksons, 3 Fender Strats (Malmsteen, Blackmore and an old HM), a Valley Arts (pre-Gibson) and a PRS McCarty.

Re: New member and new amp

striking resemblance to a Marshall! Got any internal shots? heh!

Re: New member and new amp

That amp looks just like my son's RetroKing Plexi 50. He ordered the gain stage mod with his so could nail Jubilee tones as well. Good score!

The resemblance is also there in the model name. The amp is built from circa 1968 specs for a 1987, which is a 50-watt Lead amp. Therefore, "68" and "50" give you "6850".

Here are a few tech shots, per your request. Note the NOS mustard capacitors. RJS offers Sozo as their base cap and the mustards as an option:

And here's a shot of the back, so you can see the transformers and tubes:

Just like with guitar builders, we live in a time when there are a lot of great amp makers. I've read really good reviews of the RetroKing amps. I hope your son enjoys his amp as much as I do mine. There's something about a true plexi-style circuit that I've really not heard in more modern-style amps.

As for the gain mod, Bobby at RJS offered me a similar mod and also he offered an effects loop and a PPIMV. However, I wanted to keep the circuit simple and straight-forward.

Is your son using an ABY box with his plexi? I had Matt at Tortuga Effects build this ABY box, which basically turns a supposed "one tone" plexi into a three-sound amp for me. Note the great job that Matt did matching the graphics to the look of the amp, including the RJS logo:
