New mix from my band's upcoming album (old school hard rock/metal)

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Hope you like. :)

POLARIS

In the days before the breaking of the world
We braved the seas of fortune
Beneath the rune of power, our tall ships they devoured
Our foes be they sword or bow men
Astronavigators
Heir to the thunder lord
We found sacred and unholy things upon those distant shores

In the days before the mighty lamentation
We traversed the stars at will
In heaven bound armadas we chronicled our saga
Books written in the blood we spilled
Astronavigators
Astraeus our only Lord
We beheld grand celestial kingdoms
And took them by the sword

Time rolls on
That Age is dead and gone
Yet Ages rise again
But, do the souls of men?
Oh, do you remember?

Very trippy/70's proggy man...sweet guitar tones! I hear some early Rush (first album/Caress of steel) & Wishbone Ash in there..

Dug it. My mind's eye sees mid-70s Tipton/Downing rocking the instrumental parts.

I would love to mix you guys.

The tracks are very solid.

The tones are good.

The mix sounds pretty flat and 1-dimensional... but that is not a criticism of you dudes as players. The performances are competent and tasteful. And you're a kick-ass lead player. Your mix would really benefit from a wider stereo spectrum, which would mean more tracks. Either more guitar tracks or keys on the left side.

I should add that you have what I would consider to be an extremely tasteful overdriven guitar tone. Well done.

Thanks! Rush is a definite influence ... It's pretty blatant during the drum/echo guitar/By-Tor & The Snowdog bit! :)

Thanks for listening and for the positive feedback!

There was always a bit of a struggle for us in terms of whether to make the songs more 'production pieces' or live representations. Since we recorded them all live, the decision was made to retain the live feel.

I don't disagree with your observations at all, besides the fact that I don't feel the songs sound flat or 1-dimensional. :) But I totally see where you are coming from.

You would probably enjoy my prog rock project more, in that case. LOTS of layers on that stuff, and we are still only in the demo/preproduction phase.

I should add that you have what I would consider to be an extremely tasteful overdriven guitar tone. Well done.
Thanks!

great tune! sounds very nice. Q: were the guitars close-mic'ed & were they recorded as loud as a band practice situation?

A: No, the guitar cabs were mic'd from 2ft away and at full stage volume. There was no deflection on any instrument.

I will post a pic for you.

SIR is a great place to REHEARSE, but I happen to like Stage III for recording drums and have used it for several projects. All of the hardware is mine; SIR just provided an empty room. It is not cheaper than using a commercial studio (it might actually be more expensive than most, at $1k/day) but if you have the outboard gear it's a great room.
