New Mustang Pickups

So, in the wake of a miserably botched attempt at rewiring my Mustang, I am left looking for a new set of pickups (to make a short story shorter, I got a bit careless with my soldering iron and managed to completely destroy the coil). I've searched around a bit both here and elsewhere and, being as indescisive as I am, I still can't come up with an answer. I play alot of Surf Rock (The Ventures and the like) so I'm looking for a set of pickups that will give me a nice vintage twang but, at the same time I want something that will allow me to really take advantage of a wide range of effects (I'm a huge A.T.D.I./TMV fan and Omar really love his effects). If at all possible, I'd life to stick with a single coil to retain the traditional look of my Mustang but it's not a huge deal if I can't. I hope I'm not asking too much. Thanks.

Re: New Mustang Pickups

I would look into the Duncan Antiquity Mustang pickups to replace yours if you're not going to seek out a similar year replacement, if in fact you're talking about a vintage Mustang.

I saw my first Mustang guitar on a ‘60s TV show called Shindig and a guitarist by the name of Jerry Cole doing solos for many guest artists. Soon after that, I had my band members drive me to 8th Street Music in Philadelphia to buy my first Mustang. The ‘60s Mustang replica pickups feature the same look and sound of the early pickups. The Alnico V magnet’s surface looks different from the older Duo-SonicTM pickups which used untumbled Alnicos. I re-created this same look. This pickup can also be used in a Stratocaster® for cool tones.

Omar does have a huge board and uses a SJBJ-1 jb jr. in some guitars but for the most part his other guitars tend to be stock, err I think. So you can be safe getting a vintage-styled replacement type and still mess with a long chain of stompboxes if that's what you're after, or go for the same pickups he throws in his Ibanez's.

Re: New Mustang Pickups

I looked at the Antiquity and it would certainly give me the vintage sound I'm looking for but they seem somewhat hard to get (I haven't seen them anywhere online.). The SBJB-1 seems like a good all-around pup but It's a little bit to full for my taste (I'm looking for something a slightly thinner an twangier). After going through some sound clips, I think I like the sound of the SVR-1 the best. Now, with the SVR-1 being a Strat-sized pup, what problems might I encounter as far as fit? And If I understand correctly the rail-style magnets take car of any string alignment issues--correct?

...I use AIIPs in mine, but for what you're doing I'd prefer A5s.

But really any low output single coil ought to work... IMO there's enough tweaking you can do with the amp that you can pretty much get the sound you want out of any of them, or even the stock MIJ singles which are decent enough. (and also enough diffs between amps tht the clips really become irrelevent)

Humbuckers won't give you the surfy tone. at all. IMO ;)

Re: New Mustang Pickups

I picked up some Antiquity II 60's Surf Strat pups today. I'm excited to get them wired up.
