. . . what do you think ?

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

First of all, I think MXR has either lost their minds with all the flavors of dirt boxes they have made, or are really trying to make something for everyone.

Next, Can't hate on a little EQ on any pedal. But part of the beauty of the MicroAmp is that it had one knob. If I have two, I might as well get an EQ....

I'm sticking with my original 70's box.

Still, cool upgrades. Certainly nicer than no tone, and better than just one knob. Definitely easy to keep the "original" sound or add a little something with those two. I can easily imagine wanting a little more booty going to a distortion channel or adding a little more bite to a solo to cut through.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

But if you start adding tone controls to a drive pedal, isn't it just another regular OD then ?

The beauty of a clean boost is just that - it is an "un-EQ'ed" pedal. i.e. no bass or treb controls.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

Well, yes and no.

The real issue is level vs level and gain. The boosters add crap tons of level, but no gain. The EQ on there is likely passive in that on 10 they cut zero vs the rest of the way.

This is basically a BAd Monkey without a Gain knob. That's a pretty fancy boost to me.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

It's still a boost as there is no clippin of the waveform performed by the pedal. However, I too think that the mico amp was pretty much perfect at what it did as it was: a linear clean boost.
Still, if these "enhancements" help ehx sell more of them: good for them. Mxr are one of the very good "major" players out there and they play in a rough market... They outta have some ideas that sound weird to some folks but that doesn't mean they are all bad.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

There is certainly no want for pedals theses days. This pedal may be superfluous, but at least MXR beat another manufacturer to the punch before they put a clone of the Micro Amp w these new features.

There truly is now a pedal for every player, though it may take a while to find the perfect match. I only own 2 MXR pedals, a Script 90 and a Distortion III, and I love them both. So, there is something to be said for MXR's diversity; besides BOSS, AnalogMan, and Mooer, MXR is the only company I own mutiple pedals from.

And I think this is typical of guitar players -- we rarely put all of our eggs in one basket.

So if MXR is casting their net a bit wide these days, it is certainly something to be understood and forgiven...

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

If you put this in your effects loop, will the awesomeness of the awesome overwhelm the inherent, basic awesomeness of your fundamental sound?

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

All due respect for MXR - they make some nice pedals, often a lot of bang for the buck. However for less money I could have a TC Electronic Spark Booster with more options for sound shaping than the Micro Amp has.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

never played a micro amp but this one looks tweakable which I like. It would be nice if it had a mids knob so I could have a boost with a mid boost aswell for my Muff

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

MXR rocks. Something for everyone, even if not everything for everybody. Has anyone ever broken one of their pedals?

I think it's good to have options. This is why NASA invented Velcro.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

The magic in the Microamp lies in it's simplicity. That is actually true of quite afew MXR pedals, past or present.

Re: New MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp

MXR is on fire these days...under the management of Tripps they are doing a lot of cool stuff!

I look at it like this...the Micro Amp is a great box that many players like for it's simple. one knob operation and great tone but I am sure there have been lots of guys that wanted a little more adjustment from them and now they have that! It's not like they dropped the original Micro Amp for this, they've just added a different version.

Also worth mentioning, the Micro Amp is NOT a dirt box...it is a clean boost..just gain. Any dirt that you get when using one is from your amp as the Micro Amp pushes it to crunch.

The cool thing about adding tone controls is that many guys using a box like the Micro Amp are using old style, single channel, non master volume amps and many of those amps have a tendency to get flubby on top when pushed hard so now with bass and treble controls you can tweak the tone just enough to maybe clean up the flab when playing loud.

Good call I say!
