New neck pup for specific tone

I've a Charvel So-cal, Duncan distortion set. I need a Dave Murray tone in the neck, and the distortion neck doesn't quite do it. It's a little too bright. I need something just a bit less bright, maybe a tad more low end that still matches in terms of output. So here's what I'm after: something that will sound like a hot rails when matched with a Duncan Distortion bridge. That's the best I can describe it. Smooth, but not overly bass heavy when combined with the TB-6, and output that matches nicely.

Jazz maybe. I really like that pup. Warm in the lies but still smooth and cuts through the highs.

I know, but it's probably too warm to match with the Duncan Distortion. The Duncan Distortion also has more output.

The Jazz. It has quite a bit more output than most people think, and it's what Dave used in the early 90s.

Caveat: He used a JB in the bridge back then, however.

So will a Jazz sound warm/warmer than the SH-6N when matched with the TB-6?
And curious question but where'd you read about Dave using a JB-Jazz setup? I've never really seen much for the 90's other than that white ESP he used to have.

Other sources also claim that he uses 'JBs' before switching to Hot Rails... Of course, they could be circlejerking.
Anyway, the Jazz neck *is* warm. When people say it's a bright pup, what they meant is that it's relatively bright for a PAF-type pickup.

Sure, it can sound icepicky at times, but hey, so are the JB and Distortion.

You'd be surprised how well a PAF type pickup in the neck will match a super hot pickup in the bridge. The Super D is pretty darn hot. Don't assume the 36th ann is "too warm" either

I like the previous version of that guitar, which had a Dimarzio evolution neck pickup
there.

I was just taking a guess that since my bridge pup was hotter than a Super D, my neck pup should hotter than a 36th. And it makes sense, since I am after something slightly more modern than a PAF 36th. Hell, Dave hasn't used a PAF 36th in his *main* stage guitar since the late 80's.

hows the output on the ddn for you? if you need something close but with a fatter warmer sound, look at the jazz bridge

The output matches perfectly the way I have it now. So output isn't the problem with the current distortion neck.

Jazz has been the most frequent suggestion on here and UG, so sounds like a good start. You're the first to specify between bridge and neck for it; what's the difference between the two?
