New Old Amp Day

Re: New Old Amp Day

I think by 1968 they were all silverface no? I thought early 67 was the last of the blackface parts...

I think he meant has it already been blackfaced.

Congrats OP! I've wanted a a Super for a while now. I've been looking into getting a drip edge to match my '68 Bassman and cab, but for the price they're selling for (and when you factor in that you often have to get them run through and have things replaced) I could get a Blackface for not much more. I guess you just need to wait for the right deal...

How much did yours cost, if you don't mind sharing?

I'd heard that a number of the 68's still had the older circuit in them. The cosmetics changed in 68, but the circuit was still the same until 69 (I think). Either way, apparently the early 68 and 69's were extremely easy to "Blackface".

Super Reverbs were the very last amp that CBS tampered with. You can find Silverface amps from 1970 and 1971 that still have the AB763 blackface circuit. My Super Reverb is a late 1970 and has, from factory, the blackface circuit. His 68 most assuredly still has the blackface circuit though the cosmetics are silverface.

Re: New Old Amp Day

Yes guys it is the blackface ab763 circuit from the factory. This amp just had the original speakers reconed and had new tubes & bias, caps, etc. the amp tech for Duke Robillard went through it for the previous owner, who had it since new. It has seen a lot of gigs but it is in great shape. The guy even gave me the old preamp tubes that were still good, old sylvania tubes. I feel I really scored a good deal at 900 bucks. It sounds fantastic! The breakup is so rich and fat and the clean is just beautiful. I think that I may take the 12at7 reverb driver tube and swap in a 12au7, the verb comes on pretty strong and the sweet spot is 2-2.5 I am hoping the 12au7 will just give me better control over it. Other than that, it's all good. The power tubes are new JJ's and they sound pretty darn good. But of course I'm hunting down a good pair of old RCA's and I bet I won't be disappointed when I find them!

Re: New Old Amp Day

68 SF Fenders are the same as 67 BF Fenders except for the silver face and the grill border.

Cool amp...I used to play through a 68 Super Reverb myself!

Re: New Old Amp Day

Guys I know it's ridiculous but I have never figured out how to post a pic to a forum. I know, I know.......
If you don't mind a crappy iPhone YouTube video maybe I'll do one of those.

Re: New Old Amp Day

Ned, is the tech named Roy? He does fantastic work...really made His Pro Reverb a thing of sonic beauty.

Thank you
