New-Old Les Paul

I got a killer deal on a 1978 les paul standard that I couldnt resist. The guitar looks like its hardly been played since it was bought back in 78. I couldnt believe it and with a price tag of not much over a grand out the door I had to say yes. I put in brustbuckers 2 n 3 and she's just gorgeous.
Compared to my '05 les paul standard faded she is so much darker and cleaner. Im guessing she has a dark piece of mahagony. She is also heavy, but not much heavier than my other LP. The nut needs some work as notes dont sustain quite as well as I'd like, and the neck is more of a 50s neck than the 50s neck on modern day LPs.
I gotta post some pics of her soon...
Reading some other's post of 70s LP being crap isnt what I want to hear, but I am happy with her. Just one question, could the nut being cut well for all of the strings cause some minor sustain issues?

Re: New-Old Les Paul

Wow, nice score. I have been trying to find a good deal on a used standard for the last month. I finally gave up and bought a new one.

Re: New-Old Les Paul

nice score.... get it set up by a pro or try some new strings... may add some life...

Most 70's LP's i see these days are over priced, or damaged goods... just a ton of them showing up for sale at local stores with past headstock repairs. Yet the prices are still as much as a new LP.... can't figure that one out...

Re: New-Old Les Paul

Definitely post some pics! The sustain/nut thing might be easily resolved using a lubricant in the slots (Nut Sauce) & you may not have to cut at all. Also, get it set up properly and you'll notice a big difference.

Congrats:banana:

Re: New-Old Les Paul

I'll post some pics of her tonight if I can. She plays great and the neck is nice and fat. The guitar's tone in general is just fat and dark and powerful. It was set up when I had the new pups installed but I think the guy used crappy strings or lighter strings than I wanted. Once I re-string her and set the action up just right and figure out that nut issue, I'll be ready to record with her. I love how the back of the guitar is a burst as well as the back of the neck and headstock. I love that as opposed to the one color back, neck and back of headstock.

Re: New-Old Les Paul

i guess it has a Maple neck? or is it mahogany? careful jumping up string sizes without adjusting the nut slots... can cause binding issues sometimes... but i have jumped from 9's to 10's without any issues in the past, so going up one size of strings is not a problem in some cases

Re: New-Old Les Paul

I always use 11's. They feel right to me, but Im not sure they will fit into the slots cut into the nut. Im gonna say that i assume that that cant be good. The neck is a 3 piece neck and I think it's mahagony since it's darker. Notes resonate really well through the guitar and headstock but some notes when bent and shaken with vibrato die out a bit quickly, which again is probably a nut or crappy strings issue.

Re: New-Old Les Paul

We so gotta see pics of this one :D ... or maybe you've started a thread already that I've missed?

Re: New-Old Les Paul

Sorry guys the pics are coming soon, she is back in the shop to have work done to the nut. the tech is gonna throw a shim under the nut since its too low and causing fret buzzing towards the headstock. Hopefully I'll have her back by early next week.
