New Pedal Build Day!

You may or may not recall a few weeks ago when I posted a question about my Ampeg Scrambler reissue pedal. I decided to order the BYOC Scrambled Octave kit and see how close the two sound and then decide which to sell off. Kit showed up today and I spent the last couple hours with the soldering iron in my hand. Take a look:

Clean! How's it sound?

I think like it's supposed to. It fired up no problem first try anyway. The crazy thing is, they engineered the kits to be exactly like the original Scrambler from 1968, but I might prefer the sound of the 2005 reissue that I have. I've got to A/B them side by side.

If you've never tried one of these, it's a bizarre effect. Fuzz with an octave up... but the craziest fuzz you've ever tried. Like you're running your tone through a meat grinder, and then adding an octave up to it... :eyecrazy:

Re: New Pedal Build Day!

Nice, I DIY'd one myself with a board I etched from Tonepad.com. Pretty cool and it's waiting to be boxed up at the moment (it's gonna be my first etched enclosure).

Weird effect indeed but I do like it, if not only for its uniqueness.

I see you put all 5 diodes in there. I built mine with the only two that were supposedly in the original pedals. There's supposed to be very little differences between 2 and 5 but I may very well so

Socket the 3 other ones to compare.

What are the differences between your reissue and the clone?

Enjoy the build!

Re: New Pedal Build Day!

BYOC alleges that this clone is built to the exact schematic of the originals. I believe the biggest difference between the clone and the Ampeg reissue is the parts. I did an A/B on the two with my bass today - they're very close! The octave effect is a bit more pronounced on the clone. The reissue is louder with the balance up. Like I said, they're pretty close.

I don't doubt this. Again, legend has it that the schematics had all 5 diodes indicated while the pedals only had two in... as long as it sounds good right!

Re: New Pedal Build Day!

I've for an Octavia Fuzz built by Barry over at Guitar PCB it's quickly become my favorite pedal to play with. They are crazy fun pedals.
