New pedals that excite you

Gearjoneser

Gear Ho
For me, 2012 was a year of pedals before any other obsession.

I've been happy using the guitars and amps I've sunk into, as well as my staple pedals. But, I wanted to really dig into the idea of accumulating the best modern classic pedals I've always thought about, but never acted upon.

To start with, I'm a guitar player who's perfectly happy to plug straight into an amp and control it all with my volume, tone, and picking attack. At the root of who I am as a musician, core tone is number one. Great guitars and pickups into beautiful tube amps. That's always got to be there.

But, I'm also into effect pedals, and use them liberally with some projects, as well as generally entertaining myself during my practice time....my favorite head space.

Most of the time, an effect is just a sound that you try to incorporate into a certain part of a song or solo. And then there's the times when an effect knocks your socks off, so to speak.....the pedals or rack piece that does something special.

That's what I want to talk about. The pedals or effects in general that totally kick ass. And how you use them. Let's discuss that and how to use them in your rig....straight in or in the FX loop.

My new favorites are the..

Boss Harmonist. This thing is the funnest and most wild pedal I've used in my life. I really love it. It can cover the classic Eventide harmonizer vibe, with all the harmonies put into their proper key, mode, etc. Then, you've got the ability to bend the pitch in any direction you want, fast or ramped up gradually. This pedal will do a pseudo Whammy Pedal. It can even be used in place of Octavia pedals, and deliver those goods even more dramatically than the originals. The Boss Harmonist is an instant classic.

The Boss DD-7 is the latest of the long lived digital delay series, of which each of them have a lot of useful sounds.
They sell the DD-3 and DD-7 currently; a classic and the best they got. I run this in my FX loop, and it's just amazing. It's got more features than the best boutique delays selling for 3 times the money. It's even got a full 40 seconds of looping capability, so you can create multitrack loops that are like a guitar orchestra. Also, analog and modulation sounds, as well as reverse guitar. Stereo IN/OUT. It's Boss's flagship regular sized pedal.

The Strymon Lex Rotary pedal is the dream pedal for those seeking to emulate a Leslie 147. Strymon is the best new pedal company, IMO.
It's always money well spent. Not only do the knobs do what they say they'll do, you can hold down the switches and put the knobs into a secondary mode. Then you can really dial in the pedal. Leslie mic positioning, and the ability to send the rotating speaker to one amp, with the horn going to another amp.....this pedal will make you sea sick. It's so badass.

By now, I should tell you that I bought all these at rock bottom Craigslist prices, and that was part of the fun. I normally detest Digitech Dead On Delivery products, but am completely sold on this piece....the Digitech Hyper Phase. It's really a great phaser pedal. What can I say about it's features?.... better than most, actually 7X better, and nice and dramatic.

I have quite a few other pedals, but just thought I'd shine the light on these since they're new to me.

Feel free to discuss your very favorites.

Re: New pedals that excite you

Cool thread... considering im in Ventura only a few minutes away from you i need to head over there and test your gear out ;)

I love the sound of Fender cleans... i LOVE the sound of a slightly hairy Fender amp hit hard with a good drive pedal, and for me the Fulltone stuff does exactly what i want. The OCD is my favorite pedal for dirty rhythm playing. This thing is more of a distortion pedal IMO... i keep my drive at about 10 o clock for a fat, warm, clear tone when playing riffs/chord work. All the clarity is there, i can hear every note in a chord.

The Plimsoul is seriously amazing... like 3 pedals in one. Can get some zendrive light drive tones, all the way to boosted plexi territory and anywhere in between. Everytime i think about selling or trading this, i play it and change my mind. Read about it being all over Mike Landau, and Scott Hendersons newest records.

STRYMON- I've been all over their stuff after hearing some El Capistan clips. IMO the best delays/reverbs out there. Ive owned the El Cap, Blue Sky, Lex, and Timeline... all AMAZING. I have no other words to describe them... and they sound EVEN BETTER in stereo. Studio quality stuff in pedal form.

Re: New pedals that excite you

Any pedal from Wampler that I still haven't is what I want.
I've been completely wamplerized, lately.

Re: New pedals that excite you

Yeah, a Plimsoul is on my short list. I used to live a block from Fulltone's first location...Mike Fuller's house. I love Fulltone pedals...and currently have the Clyde Deluxe first version, Choralflange, & Octafuzz. I've had the original orange FDII, blue FDII, white FDII, gold Dejavibe, original 69, and wish I still had them all. I want the white Mini Dejavibe and Plimsoul.

My most special pedal is my mint Klon Centaur, which is the most sought after version.
I think it's the best OD pedal ever made, and the one I won't ever sell. The fact that it's the best collectible pedal is a bonus. It's now valued around $1500.

A few of my other favorites are the Dunlop Bonamassa Fuzz Face/Wah combo and T Rex Mudhoney.

Re: New pedals that excite you

Not sure if you mean new as in just came out or new as in not a reissue or clone of an old pedal...that said not much has me excited right now.

I know there are some things coming up for BMF Effects I'm hyped about, AnalogMan has a pedal or two in the works that might be cool past that very little has me really pumped up.

The script reissue stuff from MXR is really great the reissue and new Way Huge stuff is also really great.

Lovepedal has gotten stale IMO, the Strymon stuff doesn't excite me at all.

ZVEX as always has some rally neat stuff but that might be about it...

All I see these days are digital delay pedals that claim to capture analog or tape sounds and none of them do...overdrive pedals that claim to nail the sounds of a Dumble and none of them do (no big loss there since IMHO the Dumble is just a big fat ho-hum tone to begin with) and clone after clone after clone of the most overhyped OD pedal in history...the Klon...

Re: New pedals that excite you

I said "new" just because it's probably funner to hear from people who just bought something that moves them.

But, older pics of your all-time keeper pedals is most welcome.

I guess I just want to see the cream of the crop pedals, regardless of the price.

Re: New pedals that excite you

I'm not trying to poop on the pedal world, I'm just not excited by most of the stuff I see coming out these days...

That said I have gotten a few things fairly recently that I dig...

Old news for sure but earlier this year I picked up a Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere which is a blast...it's big and costs a lot but IMHO it's worth it!

I've also kind of rediscovered the ZVex Box of Rock which is just an amazing OD/Dirt with a killer boost.

I got hands on an old Jen wah pedal years ago that never sounded quite right mostly due to some noise issues and a worn out pot...a quick trip to Scott at BMF Effects and now it smokes!

And of course I'm always digging into my collection of fuzz boxes for more different sounds.

Re: New pedals that excite you

I love fulltone and other stuff too. Until recently the fulldrive was my desert island pedal and the univibe is wonderful for swirl.
But this year for live work im really vibing on putting all my nice pedals in storage and using nothing but a fuzz face between me and my old fender twin. I've never been happier with the range of sounds i can get from the fuzz and the knobs on my guitar.

Speaking of fuzzes....TG...is the Mayer stuff worth the extra dollars or is it mainly for the groovy casing?

Re: New pedals that excite you

Hmm...Mayer stuff.

I used to have an Axis Fuzz that I wish I'd never sold. I got it WAY before I knew the ins and outs of fuzz pedals so at the time I had no idea why it sounded good or bad depending on what was before and after it in line, I had no idea how to really control it. Now that I knew how to work a fuzz I'd love to have it back...I remember getting some really good tones out of it but most of the time I had issues with it however looking back the issues were from other pedals in my chain and not the Axis!

That's the only Mayer box I've ever owned truth be told...

The blue one in the pics above is actually a gutted shell. It used to be an Octavia, Scott at BMF Effects rehoused it for a guy and was left with a beat up shell...I found out and ordered a custom fuzz inside it!

Now, it's a Sola Sound 2 transistor Tone Bender, the circuit known to collectors and fuzz freaks as the MK 1.5 Tone Bender. We had it refinished in a textured blue with black lines all over and Scott used some nice cream knobs...the in and out jacks are reversed so it connects to my board just like my Fuzz Faces and inside it features mojo-tastic carbon comp resisters, a very neat handwired, old school board, a NOS Mullard "tropical fish" cap and a nice set of real deal OC75 black glass trannys...

Re: New pedals that excite you

The AMT Electronics Legend Pedals are catching my eye, and I don't even use amps, just sims. I'm sorely tempted by a few of these, and only stopped by the fact that they're $169 each. :D

Oh yeah!! Seriously wondering if these are as good as they claim they are...?? If so, WANT!!

My new fav pedal is actually the only new one Ive bought in awhile, is my ADA Flanger reissue. Although, Ive not had much time with it to find many good settings. It came shipped with all the dials at about 10 oclock, and that sounds great.

Re: New pedals that excite you

TG- that circuit is art.

I take NO credit for that....Scott from BMF is the man and he has the magic!

He is also the man behind my custom white Fuzz Face...scope the guts of that one too!

I actually had the Fuzz Face changed after these pics were taken...I found a few NOS square, yellow Phillips caps like you see in the mid to late 60
s Fuzz Faces in the correct value so I pulled the Mullard Tropical Fish in favor of one of those, I just haven't taken pics yet.

This Fuzz Face is actually my go to for gigs the past year or so now...really amazing sounding unit!

Re: New pedals that excite you

Not much exciting from me here but I've recently gotten a Digitech Bad Monkey for next to nothing and it works wonders for boosting the Crunch channel of my SLO Clone. More so than my usual old SD1 or my normal 'go to' OD the Homebrew Electronics Power Screamer.

I've also recently gotten a 10-band MXR EQ and that in the loop of my Splawn Quick Rod is fantastic. The amp is no slouch to begin with but the degree of extra control the EQ adds is great.

Up until a few years ago I was all about single channel amps and a large pedalboard and getting all of my tones from pedals. I even managed to find 2 OD pedals that I liked as the primary source of gain on a clean channel and used them almost religiously; the HBE Power Screamer and the G2D Custom Overdrive.

Since I completely rethought my rig 2 1/2 years ago I stripped back all the pedals but a wah and a tuner and got all my OD tones straight from the Splawn and I now don't really use any modulation FX either. Since then I've also added the SLO Clone to my rig and with that I do need a slight boost, and I've also started using a HBE Psilocybe Phaser infront of the SLO just for a bit of extra colour here and there.

I'm actually much preferring the tone I get with the 3 or 4 main 'core' pedals I'm now using and getting more from my amps instead of using a single channel amp and then 16 FX pedals for variations.

Re: New pedals that excite you

I recently got a DOD stereo chorus that I really dig... To me it has a little flange type sound going on. I also have tweaked a Boss CE-3 to sounding good too, just more 'typical'.

I also aquired an old MXR envelope filter and a DOD fx25 envelope filter. I love auto wah stuff! So many tricks you can do with them that gets over looked I think.

I'm on the way home from Florida now and hoping to get some time in with my new Wilson Freaker wah. I've wanted one for ever lol!

I also snagged a Pharoah fuzz and that thing is pretty shweet, but my bass player stole it and uses it lol.

I really really want to try and use delay again, but I never seem to make it work in my rig.

Re: New pedals that excite you

I'll add to the plimsoul love. I was in the market for a new dirt pedal and I tried one out and totally fell in love. Tried it with a OCD, and decided on the plimsoul. I really love it, it works well with pretty much every amp.

The boss ps6 harmonist is also a realllly sweet pedal. I want one so bad. It's very easy to dial in harmonies and get instant allman bros or boston sounds.

Re: New pedals that excite you

Wampler sovereign. Just got it this weekend. While I certainly haven't played them all, it's still the best distortion I've tried.

Finally something that comes closer to a more modern sound I've been after, at least to my ears and through my setup. Not a bad sound anywhere on it, and all the settings make noticeable, great variations. And rolling off the volume returns great tones as well.

It'd be even better if it already had an optional version with footswitches for bright and boost, because those switches make noticebale differences.
