New Pick Ups or New Amp?

Tough choice for me

1) Replace the Alnico Classic Pros in my G400 with SDs.

2) Purchase DSL1CR 1 watt Marshall Tube amp

Currently I have a Vox modeling amp but don’t own a true Tube amp.

Thoughts?

a new amp is going to have more of an effect on your overall tone but i dont know if a 1w amp would be my first choice

Re: New Pick Ups or New Amp?

A Joyo Jackman is what you are looking for. A cheap, small, budget Marshallesque head. You will have to get a cab to go with it though.

Amp.

(And I love pickups. )

Re: New Pick Ups or New Amp?

For a budget amp I'd be on the lookout for something like a used Egnater Rebel 30 or Blackstar HT Studio 20; even a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or Blues Junior with a pedal in front. Far more useful if you ever plan to take it out of the house.

I had a JMP1H, which was extremely impractical: too loud for the bedroom, nowhere near loud enough to take out of the house; though it didn't have a master volume.

New amp, no question. Choose wisely though, especially in the 1-5 watt range as many of those amps don't sound too well.

Re: New Pick Ups or New Amp?

The 1W Marshall has a line out if I ever wanted to get a cabinet. I’m looking for a tube sound that I can play upstairs without annoying the wife.

With an 8" speaker you'd need a cabinet. "Tube sound" can't make up for a paltry speaker.

This topic should be moved to the dedicated amp forum.

I’d get a Fender Mustang III. Around $325. Killer amp with a nice 12” Celestion speaker.

Zillions of great sounds and you can play it at a super low volume at home or crank it up onstage too.

My VOX VTx20 is a nice modeling 20W amp so for playing at home maybe I should not get the 1W Marshall Tube and get pickups.

Re: New Pick Ups or New Amp?

This seems to be a common thing at the moment.

I agree with Lew, in that you should get a better modeling amp. If you're worried about upsetting people with volume, you're likely not going to be happy with tubes. I said this in another thread, but unless my family isn't home, I won't even bother with my Super Reverb. Yes, I can put it on 1.5, then turn the volume down on my OD pedal, but either of my 15 watt modeling amps (Vypyr or Spider) work way better for being quiet.

Re: New Pick Ups or New Amp?

Exactly what I said in the OP's other thread.
I also think it's silly to get a tube amp for the sake of it being a tube amp, especially when the output stage is a 12AX7. I'll take the Mustang III over that any day.

As far as what sounds good at lower or higher volumes I will proffer something inarguable: Fletcher-Munson. If your tone controls can't accommodate for low volume, then put an EQ in the loop.

Not sure I entirely agree there. I enjoy playing my Randall RD1 a lot more than I did my POD HD, but I'm not one of those guys that need a thousand different sounds and whatnot.

I just think that everything sounds like crap through an 8" speaker, wether it's tube, solid state, or modeling.

Seconded. The pickups, while not great, arent the priority here. The problem is the fact that ur using a vox modeller. Jackman is a good move unless u absolutely have to go full tube or want more eq options

No one has to agree. If tubes at low volumes give you the warm and fuzzies knock your socks off. As an owner of many tube amps and preamps, some of which are quite expensive, I don't determine whether my tone is good or not based on the architecture.

My go-to amp: Tech 21 Trademark 60 combo with an aftermarket speaker. The preamp isn't voiced too well for low volumes, so I'll rely on outboard gear for that. If I need tight metal I turn to something else, which will include a recto 4x12 cab as an essential part.

I'm not going to advocate anything except being more practical and frugal with a bedroom amp. I will say that dismissing digital modeling because it is not analog, or dismissing solid state because it is not tube (preamp and/or output) is closed-minded. My bank of tones is in my head and I'm able to get it through a number of methods.

Thanks guys I think I’ll pass on the 1W Marshall and get a WLH set for my Epi SG.

Re: New Pick Ups or New Amp?

Without even reading beyond the title of the thread I’m gonna say BOTH. Because, well... duh! [emoji12]

Seriously, if you’re looking for good sound at LOW volume I would think that your Vox modeling amp would de deliver better than a tube amp with an 8” speaker.
