The Amos Set

Joe Bonamassa’s 1958 Flying V was special even before being purchased by the famous bluesman – as one of just 98 Flying V’s produced by Gibson in the fifties, it has been featured in numerous books and magazines, and even had a cameo in the infamous mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap”. Remarkably, tracing the serial number led back to the original dealer where it was sold – with a photo of storeowner Amos Arthur holding the guitar in his shop as proof. So of course we were thrilled to work with Joe again to reproduce the unique original pickups from this incredible piece of guitar history.

The sound of the Amos Flying V is uniquely robust compared to other PAF loaded guitars. Careful examination of the original pickups revealed something unique – unusually strong magnetism, which could only be replicated by using Alnico 6 magnets. Although Alnico 6 might seem like an odd choice for a PAF replica, the result is surprisingly warm, clear and powerful – and matches the tone of the originals.

We’re also offering a reproduction cover option – painstakingly hand crafted in the custom shop to replicate the wear pattern of the original Amos pickups. Of course, if gold’s not your thing, we also offer nickel and uncovered options, like black and zebra.

Each set is built using period-correct butyrate bobbins, maple spacers, and wound on the same historic Leesona winding machine originally used by Gibson in the fifties and sixties, and will be hand-signed by Seymour W. Duncan and Joe Bonamassa.

Watched the video earlier, and likey. A6 adds a bit o' interest too, though the Custom Shop's had enough of my money in the last 12 months

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

Fun but uninteresting fact: Amos is also the name of my hometown in Quebec province... pick ups seem like they might sound good, A6 is quite interesting.

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

That 979 available is that total? As in, after the reliced, hand signed pickups sell out will we be able to order them from the Custom Shop with the same wind and magnet, but not exact replicas?

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

Those are pickups replica from my favorite Flying V sound!
How much for them?

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

I am sure after the holiday weekend here in the US, Riley or Max or Arwin will pop in here and answer any questions that I can't. So if you have questions, please post them. Id rather people get accurate information before inaccuracies get spread around online.

After the 979 Amos sets sell out we could make you a PAF style humbucker set with Alnico 6 magnets, but we won't be able to do this particular wind.

Gold and nickel covered sets will be $375 and uncovered (black or zebra) will be $355.

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

I would have though that much magnetism would have been bad for sustain.

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

a6 isnt as powerful as a8 or ceramic so i dont see it as an issue. interesting they used a6 in both neck and bridge

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

That's what I was thinking. The only time I've ever thought an A6 was bright enough is in lipstick pickups, and those are seriously underwound.

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

I am thinking about a set of these. Can I get them trem spaced?

Great... Now you just made me want to buy a handful of AlNiCo 6 and swap them everywhere. How dare you :/

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

So, how many Bonnamassa set variants are there going to be? That guy has a lot of guitars. One set a year for the next 45 years?

Can we request a set like one of his other guitars? Or suggest as the next run... ?

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

the partnership makes sense to me. the duncan cs makes great pups, joe has great toys and the collaborations seems to sell.

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

...And he has endless vintage guitars that have vintage pickups. Most guitarists dream of having such a collection. Replicating pickups in specific pieces is a way they can get just a little bit of that mojo of their own.

A6.. interesting...
Anyone know or care to speculate how these differ tonally from the last Joe B set?

Re: New Pickup Announcement: Joe Bonamassa Amos Set

Well, I think since they were just announced, there probably isn't many (any?) in the wild yet. Only those at SD HQ might know this, as well as Joe B.

To speculate, put A3s in a set of Seths, then put A6s in the same set and note what exactly changes. That won't tell you what the Bonnamassas sound like, but will tell you what the magnet change will do.

I have the Skinners and they are pretty overwound, and similar output, not biased much for position. Neck is 8.33k and bridge is 8.66k, so there's that.

After the Amos sets are gone will the A6 PAF that are built be at the same price?
I have an interest in these pickups but not almost $400 interest....

Depending on the options chosen, a set of Custom Shop humbuckers will range from about $300 to $320 on average.
