New pickups day.....

Re: New pickups day.....

Killer! I love the look of that candy apple red strat with white/black.
Gotta love new pickups that hit the amp hard!

Even if you ARE a Seymour Duncan traitor!:butkick:

Hehe yeah it was born like that, with two under the coils ceramics singles...uhu and one hotrail in the bridge....not very stratty!

Then I threw in the VZ's, and it got very vintagey.....
Finally got curious enough to try a new set of Wilde's....as I used to have L-250's and L-200's back then...
Have used BL pickups as long as Duncans....

These are not hot singles, they are very natural sounding strat pickups, clear and open, good bell and resolution....very stratty.
And quiet.

Re: New pickups day.....

Probably closer to Joe Barden rail type pickups. And that's a good thing. Vintage tone with more balls.

Re: New pickups day.....

Nice. I see he also has a Tele flavored version...the stockers in my Charvel blow...hmm.

Re: New pickups day.....

Ordering some L500's for my Schecter tomorrow. It'll be good to talk to Bill and Becky again. It's been a long time and those people are so nice.

Re: New pickups day.....

Old thread I knowses!!
Here is one crappy vid and equal crappy playing of the L-45's in action....
Had the guitar apart yesterday and reinstalled the Van Zandts....nothing wrong, but I just like these L-45's more:laughing:
So I took it apart again and reinstalled the L-45's, trimmed the wires, and measured them up and installed them according to the slight variations in them, hottest at the bridge, weakest at the neck....
Fooled around with the heights and liked this setup the best.
One day I am going shield paint it as well, and refret this old baby...org nickel frets from 85(I defently need steelfrets :eek13: ehehe not)

Re: New pickups day.....

You gotta quit posting clips of the L45's! I'm going to have build a guitar around them if you don't!

Re: New pickups day.....

Barden's pickups are a twist on Bill Lawrence's design. I've heard people who have both say they're very close, with Bardens are a bit harsher/L-45s a bit more polite. Their clips supported the claim.

Among the many pickup sets I want to try are a couple of different Bill Lawrence sets. L-45s and L-500XL plus L-90 are high among them.

Re: New pickups day.....

^
Considering that a set of Barden strat pickups is about three times the price of a set of Lawrence pickups, I'm going with Bill and Becky. Christ, I bet you could probably contact them and custom order hotter pickups and still come out ahead of the Bardens.

That said, I've heard nothing but good about Barden's pickups.

Re: New pickups day.....

I've seen a lot of posts about Barden's bass pickups coming apart. Including during initial install, and him refusing to do anything about it. I don't know if that's a general issue, or just a bass pickup quirk.

The worst photo I've seen was of someone hooking the pickup top with the pickguard while removing the pickguard and ripping the pickup apart. I'm not sure that particular situation is worth worrying about... if the cover hadn't ripped off, the pickguard would likely have shredded the coil anyways.

I've never heard a complaint about Bill Lawrence's pickups and ruggedness. I love how open Bill Lawrence is with technical information, as well. The information summaries on the forums his Wilde site links to are great stuff.

Re: New pickups day.....

Well I can only recommend these if you have a guitar that is good!
Really like them alot in my old Navigator.
Wired it up in a more permanent way the other day, I never cut the wire to length, until I am certain I wanna keep them:)

Re: New pickups day.....

My super strat (silverburst HS) has a C5/59 hybrid and Hot Rails right now.

I like the hybrid, but the Hot Rails is just a tad hot and dark. At first, I was thinking of the YMJ neck, but now you've got me thinking about the L-45 neck.

I just use a 3 way and volume on that guitar, so I may try out an L-45 attached to a Fender S-1 switching pot, so I can split it.

Re: New pickups day.....

Does anybody know if the Tele versions are actually Tele-flavored or just basically a Strat version in a big cover? I can't listen to any frickin clips from here on the ship.

Re: New pickups day.....

Yup... I was the first on the forum to get L-45's. They are amazing. I have one in my bridge and I used to have it in the neck.

I think Fusion1 and Briantherocker got some too.

Amazingly clear.
I think you where 4 when I bought my first Bill Lawrence pickups:D

Yep those are great pickups, and not costly either.
Be sure to have a good sounding guitar though!
These are detailed beings!
