New pickups for my EC-1000

Re: New pickups for my EC-1000

That JB thing - a lot of people say that. Or at least some definitely experience it. I had the same experience with aJB in an all mahogany Dean Cadillac. Could not stand it in house by itself. However - got the most tone compliments ever with it in a band setting. Whatever that pitch boost is, it totally works in a band, but maybe not at home!

I put an A8 magnet in it and love it now. Which, put it more in the DiMarzio camp.. Ha!!!!

I recently acquired 2 Ibanez guitars both with a JB in the bridge.
I was unsure about how I felt about them. That upper mid thing and all.
But last week at rehearsal I played one and wow did sound amazing in the context of the mix.

I can say the same thing about one of my guitar with EMG (60/S/S), a bit lifeless by itself but working great with the band.

I don't think the Black Winter is brighter than the Distortion, personally. I've switched them around in two of my guitars, and, while at first the Black Winter seems to have more bite, the Distortion has more sizzle. The Black Winter is more up-front because it's got less low-end, though. I dig both. But yeah, I agree with everyone that it's odd that you find the Distortion not bright enough.

I'm going to try the distortion again and compare it to the Black Winter.

Honestly, it sounds like you would like a Tone Zone in the bridge and a Norton in the neck LoL!

I'll check them out, thanks!

Custom in bridge vote here.

Not sure on the neck.

I'm leaning towards the Custom for the bridge. How does it cut through the mix compared to the JB?

I was wondering how the JB sounds with an A8 vs the stock A5. How are the clean and low gain tones with the A8, and does it still have the piercing high end?

That is the only thing I like about the EMG's. They cut thru the mix so well. If the 60 in then neck was brighter and had any type of feeling to it I would love it

Re: New pickups for my EC-1000

Can’t speak to low gain / clean sounds with A8 - never use them with that pup/guitar.

However - A8
- Slightly less highs, no piercing sound
- tamed/evens out mids a bid
- bigger/tighter bass
- Good power overall

It evens out the pickup, smooths and thickens.

That sounds like what I'm looking for. Does it still cut through the mix like the stock JB?

I don't know if it 'cuts through' as much as 'barrels through'. It is a pretty extreme pickup.
