Keep in mind that the tone in the sound demo was essentially with all the knobs set to 12:00. There is a LOT of room to boost and cut and the midrange is a very effective parametric eq. I've used this little box on my 7-string tuned both standard and a full step down and it crushes. On my post of same topic in the Fender forums, someone mentioned Lace Drop & Gain pickups? Again, I've heard nothing about them. So it looks like Black Winters so far. First, I'll get a new amp, at the suggestion of many, then I'll see about Black Winters.

They are pretty good. I would say a bit more modern appearance, with the neck having a more substantially vintage tone than the BWs. The bridge is a touch less aggressive and maybe a bit darker in tone. I prefer the black winters by a fair margin.

For your musical taste I would recommend a used amptweaker tightmetal pedal and/or a good amp. Don't look for a fender blues jr. to do metal. The amptweaker likes a perfectly clean tone so it might be usable with your frontman.
