new power tubes

I figure it's time for some new power tubes for my Rivera Fandango. It has Svetlana EL34s in it now, and I'm thinking they are original to the amp. I was just going to order some JJ's from eurotubes, but does anyone have anything else they'd recommend to try over those?

Re: new power tubes

I've used the Winged C/SED EL34s in one of my Mesa amps, and liked them a lot. Their 6L6 is also one of the best. The SED tubes had very little mechanical noise, which is an important consideration for my high-powered combos; and a nice full sound--a great all-around tube.

I think I'm going to try the Groove Tubes EL34-M, which is a Chinese-made Mullard clone.

I know thetubestore.com is very high on the new Russian-made Tung-Sol EL34s. Bob Pletka at eurotubes.com has the JJ line. These are very fine tubes, though I think they are better suited to heads more than combos.

Good luck!

Re: new power tubes

First, why are you replacing them...is there something going on with it or does it just seem like the thing to do? Also, are you happy with the proformance and tone at this point of the tubes that are in it...if so stick with the Svets. In answer to your question my fav EL34's are NOS Mullards but at $400+ a pair they are not the best choise for most players...the reissue Russian made Mullards are quite nice as are the Winged C SED's. A lot of players like the JJ's but Im not one of them but they are a very stout tube if thats what your looking for, I also like the plain old SOvtek EL34's too.

Re: new power tubes

Well, I'm thinking that these current tubes have been in it for a few years. I'm gigging with it almost every weekend now, and I don't have a set of backup tubes, so I figured I'd try something new. The Svetlanas are ok I guess, I'd like something maybe a little brighter?

Re: new power tubes

I like my Tung Sol EL34's a lot. The highs are there but not icepick-in-your-ear. The mids are smoooooth and the lows are super tight under high gain. I would definitely buy them again if they crapped out. My .02.

Re: new power tubes

In my last Marshall I bought both a pair of Wing C Svetlana and JJ EL34L's. After biasing them both out and running them on stage a couple of times each. I would up with the JJ's in the amp because they had a tighter bottom overall bigger sound and MUCH better clean much to my surprise.

In my experience the JJ 34 's are perhaps a little darker.
