Got this in trade a few days ago. 3 piece ash body that weighs right at 3.5 pounds. Two tone sunburst is the name of the game on this one but with a slightly darker grain if possible. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Should I just use a darker grain filler? Any recommendations are appreciated. My resume' with guitar finishing begins and ends with rattle can so any advice is welcome!

I'm thinking something along the lines of this as far as how dark the grain is.

Map gas
Lightly scortch it with flame

*(Sent from my durned phone!)*

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe see if you can find a small piece of ash and practice on it first before you start torching your guitar to see how the wood reacts to the heat from the torch where you scorch the top completely black and regret it.

Re: New project day!

On my current project (ash body tele) I applied walnut colored stain then sanded down and Tru oiled for a similar effect.

Re: New project day!

Okay it's been finished.

Not sure if my process was "correct" but I don't really care...First I sanded with 300 to smooth it out a bit, then I grain filled (with colortone rosewood grain filler), sanded, grain filled, sanded. After that I used the same colortone brand sanding sealer, block sanded, sanding sealer and block sanded again. Then sprayed the outer brown band for the sunburst, then went the inner vintage amber color. Also colortone. I don't think I'm gonna do any clear over it just yet as I have some parts that need touched up. Turned out as good as i expected... which was okay... after all I'm not a professional and I used rattle cans... I sprayed the outer band a little thicker than I would have liked but I still like it anyway. Pics coming soon.

Re: New project day!

Thanks man! As you can probably tell I didn't do the best job on the grain filler...

Oh well man, the point is you tried. It was your first time and I think it's great that you went for it! I would say you did a great job for never doing it before!
