New project: What body & neck should I look for?

Hi folks!

I've been surfing guitar project and painting sites for a while and think I'm just gonna dive in. I just love messing around with guitar parts... almost as much as women body parts :)

In the past I spent many hours and dollars on SX parts but I really wasn't satisfied with it. I don't want to go that route again. I want to build an axe that will not only look good, but also plays well. That doesn't apply to SX guitars.

I'm thinking bang-for-the-buck here. Should I aim at MIM Strat bodies & necks? Or Squier? Or stuff like Mighty Mite or Allparts? Warmoth is too expensive, this is my first build and I don't want to break the bank only to realize I can't build a decent guitar with a gun to my head.

I had an MIJ Ibanez Roadstar last year which would have been absolutely perfect for the purpose, but financial problems forced me to sell it. These are great cheap axes too.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

be patient and score a body and neck from USACG web specials. you really have to check it every day and then jump on one when you see it cause they sell real fast. but they are the best bang for the buck you will get imo, very well priced.

Allparts, Warmoth, and USACG parts should be pretty much interchangeable. The trouble with using something like SX guitars for parts, is parts might not be interchangeable. And newer Fenders have all sorts of changes I can't keep track of. Like the Telecasters with the 3 screws holding down the bridge. To me, a Tele should have every part, completely interchangeable with a Pre-CBS Tele.

So I prefer to stick with Allparts, Warmoth, and USACG for body parts, and that way everything should fit together, and hardware that's been around for decades will work.

You know I'll buy some sooner or later... or sell... or both :D
