New PU

Forgive me for seeming noobish if i do, I am new when it comes to this topic, I am kind of new when it comes to switching out PUPs. I am considering putting a JB in my Epi Les Paul custom soon to replace the stock PU that came with it. Most research i've looked at has encouraged me that this PU will be what im looking for (Hard rock, classic rock, a little punk, i dabble with a lot). This is actually the first place that ive seen mixed reviews on the JB. I understand it can be a difference of opinion (and that it often is), but i was just wondering what the feedback is on me installing this PU in my guitar, whether or not it would be a good idea. Im always open to constructive criticism, so be as honest and harsh as you wish, i wont cry about it. Thanks a lot

Re: New PU

welcome the forum!!

the jb has a certain tone to it, some people love it, some dont. there are sound samples on the product page. if the jb isnt for you then the sh5 custom might be a great alternative. im sure either would sound better than the stock pup

Re: New PU

Yeah i listened to the sound samples and I was happy with the way the JB sounded, I just wish there was more variety other than those two samples lol. I just got a litle apprehensive hearing similies to it referring to "sheering ice-picking" noises and "shrill piercing to the ears." I suppose those may just be personal opinions

Re: New PU

I'm fairly new to the JB, having picked up a Jackson SL2H a couple months ago. At first it was very bright, but now I've learned to control the brightness with my technique. I like it a lot now, especially for singing leads.

Re: New PU

There's a lot of JB's in stock guitars, and there's a lot of JB's pulled out & sold on the used market, because their tone is a love it or hate it thing (I hate it; too harsh & bright). I'd recommend a Custom 5 instead, much better tone. But whatever you choose, you can change the EQ with different magnets, pots, and caps.

Re: New PU

All (well, most) guitar players are picky about their tone. We (SDUGF) are really picky about our tone... often maniacally so. That doesn't make us any more or less right.

Truth is that the JB works for a lot of people all over the world. It works well for a lot of guys on here, too, however, some have found something that suits the tone in their heads better than the JB, that's all. I personally thought the JB did just fine in my Les Paul, but I ended up trying the SH-5 Custom and liking it a lot more.

Good luck.

Re: New PU

Custom 5 sounds like a safer bet to me. But I'm one of the people who thinks the JB has harsh, piercing tone.

Re: New PU

Thanks a lot guys. I'm probly going to try it out myself, i know tone is a very personal thing that can appeal differently to everyone, and i usually like a more sharp tone so this may suit me even if it is a little harsh, we'll see. Thanks a lot tho for the feedback

Re: New PU

For me, the best I've ever heard a JB sound was in my 73 Les Paul Deluxe in the bridge (no, I didn't route it, lol). It sounded nice and warm while being sooo edgy as well. It also sounds great in my 68 Epiphone Casino (bridge again). I did not like it in either of my Jacksons. In those, the sound was too bright or maybe even ice picky and the tone knob didn't really help.

Re: New PU

Yeah, its going into my Epi Les Paul Custom which is a pretty warm guitar, i dont think it'll be too bright going into that, for my taste at least. I've been listening to lots of sound clips and i think that it'll suit what im looking for well
