New pup(s) for my Kelly

Thrash it up

New member
Hello,
I got a Jackson Kelly KE5FR (discontinued model) with a huge alder body (pretty heavy :1: ), mapple neck thru and a rosewood fingerboard.
It came stock with (no surprise) the JB/Jazz combo on it. That sounds good but my other guitar has a ebony fingerboard and I prefer the sound of that one with the JB.
The rosewood fingerboard tends to add too much mids in the mix with the JB, so What could I choose instead of it? As you can see with my nick name, I'm more in old school metal. I'd like something with a similar output, may be slighly more but not too much, but definately not less! To play hard riffing but mostly solos.

Thanks a lot

Will it match better than the JB? I mean, I heard that one was full of mids. And isn't it too treebly for soloing?

Re: New pup(s) for my Kelly

usually bridge pickup=riffing & neck pickup=soloing . But yeah DD is very treebly. You could go half way and stick a ceramic magnet in your JB

Check this:

Great Video indead. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that the JB is more full of low mids while the Distortion has more high/high mids with a more scooped low end?

I'm surprised for the leads in thos vids, even if the highs has smoothed with the JB, the high notes sound good even with the distortion.

Well I think it answered my question :)

Thanks a lot

Re: New pup(s) for my Kelly

I think it shows how crappy JB is in mahogany and how much more output and attack DD has. but iy has soloing so it should have given you an idea what to expect from DD in that area

Re: New pup(s) for my Kelly

You would probably like the Custom too. If JB= Marty Friedman, Custom = Jeff Waters.
