New pups for an Epi LP

Re: New pups for an Epi LP

I think that could work, but just switching the magnets between the neck and bridge could work a lot better.

I’ve got a neck pickup in my LP that is sort of similar to the A2P. I’ve been contemplating putting a 500K vol pot on it.
I just might give that a shot. Thanks!

Re: New pups for an Epi LP

It seems to me like dropping $200 on pickups for a $399 guitar is like putting spinners on a $800 Chevy. Despite changing out the pickups, you still have a guitar that may or may not have the natural sound you seek.

With respect, that analogy only works if we think of pickups as a vanity accessory (like spinners). But they're not. Pickups are one of the most important components of an electric guitar. As such, they are a relatively cost-effective way to augment a cheap guitar. Are they going to make your $399 guitar sound like something three times its price? Of course not. But they will make your tone a whole lot better than whatever you'd get from the stock pups.

My vote is in for a Custom in the bridge and Pearly Gates neck. But, I would also consider the Custom 5 for the bridge... it is my preferred bridge pickup. The C5 is very dynamic and open. A full Pearly Gates set is an awesome combo too - amazing clarity, tons of crunch and attitude. You can likely tell I prefer A5/A2 pickups over ceramic magnets.

With you on the Custom 5 rec. I think Black Winters would work very well for the OP's playing range, but the Custom 5 would be a killer choice for the bridge too. Dynamic, open, does a wide range of distorted music well.
