Sorry for the long-winded post...
After playing the LP last night I've had it with the 490R in the neck. This thing is muddy as can be and has way too much bottom end. IMO, nothing sounds worse than ultra muddy low tones. All I can discern from the Gibson website is that the 490R is that it is a PAF based pickup with an alnico 2 magnet with increased upper mids. Beyond that, I don't know where it would fit into the SD tone chart.
Now, the 498T in the bridge produces fairly good tone to my ears. My only complaints might be that it's a tad bright when clean (easily fixed by rolling back the tone knob) and it's not quite tight enough on the bottom end for palm-muted single note riffing. Other wise, the lows, mids, and highs are right where I would like them in this LP. What I know of the 498 is that it's got an alnico 5 magnet, increased input (over what they don't say), and an emphasis on the mids and highs.
Based on what I know of the stock Gibsons, I think I might like the C5 in the bridge and that it might be on par with the 498 in terms of its voicing. Only question is, how articulate is this pup? I want something with a lot of clarity on the bottom without having too high of an output. I also thought about getting another Screamin Demon, since it tears up the single note riffing on my strat, but I kinda wanted to try something different.
Neckwise, I'm leaning towards either the Jazz neck or the PG neck. My only concern lies in the PG neck, worried that it might also have a bit too much bottom end for the neck of a LP (keep in mind that I tend to think that for some reason my LP seems a little darker than most. Maybe it's something in the wood?)
So...
bridge: C5 or Demon
neck: Jazz of PG
Thanks for your patience. Now, any opinions?
