New pups for USA Jackson Soloist....

I'm toying with the idea of replacing the stock active pups in my Soloist. I play mostly 80's rock through a Splawn Quickrod amp. I am thinking a JB bridge, vintage rails middle, cool rails neck. Any thoughts or other suggestions? Thanks.

The JB is a good choice with the single coils. Another pup you might want to try is either the Screamin' Demon or the Custom. I've had all three in 2 different Soloist and they all sounded good.

I was an 80's Metal guy and still love that kind of stuff. I have a JB in the bridge of my USA Chigago Custom Washburn MG 120 which is nothing but a Jackson Dinky since Grover did the design and was running that shop. saying that for the metal tones i don't use that guitar I use my Swamp ash MG 102 from the same year with a Custom that I swapped the mag in for an A8. For the 80's metal tones the A8 custom absolutely NUKES the JB !!!

You could to JB/59 like the Jackson SL2h comes stock.

What don't you like about the stock pickups?

For the record, the 1986-1995 era Jackson Pickups are not themselves active, but are merely buffered by an onboard preamp. THis means that you can keep the preamp and swap the pickups out like I prefer to. Unless they´re the Reflex brand actives that were available as an upgrade

I would go with a Custom or Distortionin the neck. That JB may be muddy. I had an SL2H a few years back that sounded ok with the JB but it was slightly muddy. I didn't keep it long enough to try a Distortion.

That's good to know. Thay are the stock Jackson's not an upgrade. There is another curveball now in that the neck and middle slots won't take a standard size strat baseplate/pup, so I am limited to what pups I can use there due to where the wires come out of the pups. Amazing playing axe, but this is going to be quite a challenge I'm afraid. :sad:

While hearing this, I couldn't resist pulling out my SL2H and playing through my POD. While butchering your great music wth my sloppy chops (sorry LOL), I was able to get very very close to your tone with the JB. I'd say yours might have a touch more vowel, whereas the JB sounded a little more flutty.

Of course the only way to compare for sure is side by side, because your recording going through my playback (fairly good Altec Lansing ACS41 speakers) probably changes the tone quite a bit from what you hear live. But from what I'm standing, the JB sounds very close.
