i dont really understand what your getting at. do u have pictures of old and new ones for comparison?

Go to the main SD site and you'll find it. As for a sound comparison, maybe it's my computer, but I didn't notice a difference. The ones I listened to (Hot Rails & Lil' '59) sounded great both old and new.

P.S. Sorry Evan. I saw your post after I responded. So the fact that I didnlt hear a difference is cool.

For what it's worth, the new covers are made of the exact same plastic as 99% of all the Strat single coil covers on the market.

And we can't have that, can we?

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

If any of you have interest in grabbing some of the old ones we have a limited number left in stock that we are closing out ....

A few vintage rails, one cool rail and a few JB jr. and Lil "59's"

Email me if interested ...

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

I went back over the sound of each design--I do hear a drop in the mid in the new design--it even shows up on a bandwidth/eq graph. It also shows less highs, but you don't really notice that. Very close if you don't study them to hard.

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

What is all the fuzz about??
It is functional with the design....I too have gotten strings stuck in a rail design....grrrr
I'll just soak those nice new shiny houses into some coffee and have some nice "aged" covers, would looke nice:)

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

dont really mind either one to be honest, but the new ones kind of look like the dimebucker, a lot mroe metal looking rather than vintage ish. what exactly was the point in changing the design?

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

I, for one, welcome this new pickup design. I'd like to remind the Seymour Duncan company that, as a trusted Duncan user, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toll in the underground pickup caves. :laugh2:

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

Rid I hate to burst your bubble, but:

1) You can't soak just the housing as it's non-removable, so unless you want to drown the whole pickup and see if it's waterproof, I'd advise against it.

2) The kind of plastic the housing is made of, it's doubtful it will turn the brown color you are looking for. It's not like the vintage plastic that will take to staining. With this type of plastic, you can wipe the coffee color right off if it colors it in the first place. I am assuming this is the same kind of plastic on most strats and the ones I have tried do not stain in black coffee even after a week of soaking.

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

anyone who doesn't like this modification is either nuts or... well- has never actually used a single coil sized hb pickup.
EVERY rails or lil pickup i've ever owned caught the high 'e' whenever i'd go for a big bend or 'went towsend' w/ the strumming.
neck, middle, bridge... it always happened.

bravo to evan and everyone at sd for listening to the damnds of the players and facing the fickle nature of some on this board.
i might start buying some of those lil and rails pu's again.

now if you can make something similar for humbuckers that'd be super.... like an openface (wont effect the basic look) bobbin surround that's standard on hum and trembuckers?

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

My main problem with the JB Jr, and the lil 59 was that they weren't spaced correctly. MY strat's single coil slugs were directly underneath the string, ,HOWEVER, when I put in my JB Jr. and lil 59 the two middle poles appeared to line up, the next two out (b and a) appered to both be moving tword the outside of the string, and the outer poles (E and e) were even more 'outside' the strings. -Why? :dunno: :?:

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

Never spaced correctly, eh? Lemme guess, you have a Korean-built Strat. I'm going to go further out on a limb and guess that it was built at the Cort factory.

How close am I?

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

I like them both but think that voice on the sound comparisons is hilarious!

EDIT: actually just looking at them i dont like the new ones much at all just cos they look so shiny and fatter, but thats probably the photography. But i welcome the changes as i hate catching my high e string on the bottom of my JBJr and having it rip the top of the pickup cover off!

The voice is still ridiculous :laugh2:

That voice belongs to none other than former User Group Administrator, Mister Rodney Gene!

They're made of the same material as Strat pickup covers. And, actually, they're thinner then the old ones.

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

I wld personalyy go in for the new ones. The bridge and neck sit pretty high on my (current) axe, so I have wld have to raise the pups. I am planing on a cool rails for the neck, currently a JB sits on the bridge. It was really bothering me all along regarding the pup not being covered totaly. My stock pups, which sucked big time [super low out out and very very bright making rhythm playing even in the neck position with tones turned off virtually impossible] are totaly covered. I know they lokk like EMGs and kind take of the cllasic look, but I believe the nes pups are more practical.
Yes I too wld welcome the same for Humbukers (maybe at least on a small scale, or as an option.)

I like the look of the new ones, though I would really like them better if they were flat colors and not shiny.

Re: New Rails vs. Old rails, on appearance

I am EXTREMELY happy for the new design. I bought 10 of them with old design: a set of duckbuckers, a set of vintage rails, one lil 59, two JB Jr. and one Hotrail. I got rid all of them for one reason or another. The new design seems to capture the technology behind the stacked or rail buckers. The new desing answered my desire to have more moderned and sophiscated appearance. If anyone prefers a real traditional design, he or she should get a classic stack or hot stack.

Cheers
