New Satriani Pickup

It seems he has a new model called the Mo' Joe that he is using in the new guitars. I was thinking the switch to the JSX was the cause of his tonal decline of late but maybe these have something to do with it as well. He should have just stuck with the PG's

One thing is funny though. DiMarzio states, on their website, that the Mo'Jo is bigger-sounding than the Fred and with more output. The DC resistance of the Fred is 10.07 and the Mo'Jo is 9.76...

Resistance isn't directly output. Output depends on the voltage output a pup produces through interaction between magnet and winding. For example: an evo has considerably less resistance than a tone zone(13.84 on the evo and 17.31 on the TZ) but the evo puts out more voltage(404mv to 375mv) and to my ears it really has more output. Dimarzio has those voltages stated directly above the resistance and voltage is a way better indicator for output than resistance. The stronger the magnet the more output you will get even with less resistance.

lower DC paired with a good ceramic magnet yields to a very nasty open sounding pickup.. but you have to dig in and it'll make you work.

they dont cover up any mistakes like a JB or a distortion might.

but the winding has to be optimised for the magnet.

Extraordinarily so. A) Who conviced him that was a good look and B) he should be bitch slapped for being conned into.

You'd be surprised. My rig sounded pretty decent. I got a FRED for cheap. I put it in. It instantly sounded freakin' weird like the tone on surfing with the alien. It took my warm, screamin' fat breed tone and turned it into a plastic digitally sounding tone.

The Fred is the only Dimarzio thus far I've totally HATED.

I dont like the FRED either...but Surfing was PAF Pros, which I didn't find so bad when I tried them....but Joe managed to make them sound horrible :laugh2:

Only two so far, and they were both released recently. The other two, the FRED and Paf Pro were in the Dimarzio line for a long time. He just happened to start using them at some point.

FRED was actually designed for him...according to articles of the time period...DiMarzio made him sev prototype pickups, and Joe gave them the names of flintstones characters to differentiate them. FRED was his choice out of the protos.

Indeed. I remember when FRED wasn't even available yet. The mag article came out sev months before the pup hit the shelves...created quite a stir. Back then ANY new pup was big news.
