Re: New Satriani Pickup

Looks like the Queer Eye guys had their way with Petrucci... :)

too bad the paf pro still blows them all away.:laugh2:

Why would you say that? I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I just would like to hear your thoughts. I like the Fred. But it can be a tad bright.

Re: New Satriani Pickup

Personally i like the paf joe. Also if you hear joes tone on songs where it is not being processed through a harmonizer, his tone is sweet an very detailed (at least to my ears). Anything you run through a harmonizer is going to have that certain sound degradation to it. i am actully interested in the mo joe myself.

Re: New Satriani Pickup

I think there are some really nice tones on Surfing With the Alien and Flying in a Blue Dream. I also think the live tones on the Dreaming #11 sound good.

Joe lost me with the Extremist and what followed.

FRED was actually designed for him...according to articles of the time period...DiMarzio made him sev prototype pickups, and Joe gave them the names of flintstones characters to differentiate them. FRED was his choice out of the protos.

What happened to the elusive Barney and BamBam pickups? :laugh2:

Re: New Satriani Pickup

I guess i'm the only one here who thinks Satch has a Great tone. (the new JSX sounds amaszing too!)

anyway the PAF Pro and FRED are my 2 main pickups.

I do like the PAF Pro more though. I have the FRED in my Explorer and its bright sounding. So IMO it would probably sound really bright In a Strat.

Re: New Satriani Pickup

I dig his earlier tones from Flying in a Blue Dream, and Surfing With The Alien. PAF PRO & Kramer??? (I heard he recorded with Kramer guitars for one of those albums)

sounds artificial, plastic, thin, unnatural, weird, etc.

It sounds not of this Earth.

PAF Pro on the other hand pulls off ALL styles at least 90% well.

Good question.

Or what about the harley engine Vai pickups that didn't make it; like the panhead, and whatever else was mentioned.

Not of this earth? Pun intended?

Re: New Satriani Pickup

I love the tone I get from my FRED in my JS1000BP. Doesn't sound too bright at all. I think his "poor tone" has more to do with the rest of his rig rather than his guitar. IMO, a stock DS1 into a Marshall isn't that killer. Kind of an amature rig.

My JS rips through my Mark III.

Re: New Satriani Pickup

To avoid top-end screech, the trick with the FRED is to use it with a 250K volume pot. A few years back Gary Brawer, who does Satch's work told me that this is how he set up Satch's FRED equipped axes.

I like Satch's tone up until he switched to the JSX and apparently the new pups although I didn't know it at the time. I've played the JSX and I know it can sound good but on the recordings I've heard Satch do with the new amp the tone is too bright, too metal forwhat he is doing. the SF DVD sounds great. The Denver and Tokyo G3's not so much.
