New SD Pickup For Bridge

Hi all. Im looking to replace one of the PUs in my LP. I currently have duel SD Alnico Pro IIs in it. Im in a band, which plays metal, anything from Metallica, Trivium, Pantera, A7X, those style of bands and my brother whos our rhythem guitarist has the EMG 60/81 combo and i know my PUs are no where near that level of output that his EMGs produce so therefore they slightly drown out my guitar. I know his EMGs are active PUs and mine are not and that maybe one factor why they slightly drown out my guitar but im still looking for a higher output PU to go in the bridge of my LP. I am keeping the Alnico Pro II that i have in the neck so its just the bridge PU im looking to replace. I want to stick with SDs as i want to keep that vintage open coil style look so no EMG suggestions please as i dont really want to go down that route. I was looking at either the
SH-6 duncan distortion or SH-5 duncan custom.

What do you guys think? Your quite welcome to suggest any other high output SD PUs that you might think will go well next to the Alnico Pro II and/or your opinions on the PUs above.

Any help/suggestions would be cool.

Cheers

MrB

Re: New SD Pickup For Bridge

Either the Distortion or Custom would work fine IMO for the sound you are looking for.

Re: New SD Pickup For Bridge

Cheers man. I tried other forums with the same question but the keep referring to changing the neck pickup too, to something like a SD Jazz but i wasnt keen on doing it as i like the Alnico and i would save me money too! :D

Re: New SD Pickup For Bridge

The jazz is a great pup, but the A2P is just fine (especially for someone named Mr. Brownstone :D). You know what you want and don't want. I hate when people completely ignore that and insist on you doing something else. It happens around here occasionally, but for the most part, everyone will try to find something that fits your guidelines.

i like your choices man. i think either would work fine. i have a bill lawrence l-500 lead which i highly recommend for that type of metal. BUT its a blade PUP so your not interested. anyway ya the custom or distortion would be ideal for you. welcome to the place to be dude.

The actual power of the pups is only going to translate to slightly more or less distortion, so more powerful pups won't necessarily make your guitar "stand out" more or less.

Quite honestly you might want to look at the 10K deal SD is cutting us forum guys for a pup that will have more output than your A2P, but still have the PAF clarity.

BTW the jazz and A2P are essentially the same pup but with different magnets, the A2P is sweeter and smoother, the jazz is more percussive and brighter...with a tad more articulation.

Going with the regular duncan line I would look at the Custom, Custom 5, Distortion, JB, or Custom Custom.

The Custom Series---The Custom Series is all on pup configuration but with different magnets. The coils are symmetrical and the pups come with Standard 4 Conductor wire

Custom---The Custom is a PAF kicked up a few notches. This pup gets its aggressive edge from its Ceramic magnet. This pup has lots of grind with good treble and midrange. It also has ample bass for palm mute playing.

Custom Custom---The Custom Custom is a midrange heavy pup that lends itself to leads and warming bright guitars. This pup gets its huge midrange from the Alnico 2 magnet. I has smooth bass and treble. Essentially it is an overwound A2 PAF.

Custom 5---The Custom 5 is a pup with an EQ very identical to The 59. It has thumping bass, scooped mids, and cutting treble. Like the 59 it is a bright pup that will liven up dark guitar, but the bass can be overwhelming in a bassy guitar, or the the treble overwhelming in a trebly guitar

JB---The JB is in a class of its own. There is really no other pup like it. It has fair bass and lots of treble. This particular pup has a large upper mids spike that allow it to cut through the mix like no other. It can be heard on countless recording especially throughout the 80's. Lots of people like to pair it with a Jazz or 59 in the neck. In bright guitars it is usually soldered to a 250k pot just like the original Seymour made 30 years ago.

Distortion---This is like a hot rodded custom. Lots of harmonics, mids and highs, with good enough lows to give you some grind thump. It has an oversized ceramic magnet which gives it a lot of power, as well as aggression.

Hope all that helps man!

technically it IS a hotrodded JB.

and it also gets my vote here, give the distortion a try

Re: New SD Pickup For Bridge

I'd probably go with a Distortion bridge.

Re: New SD Pickup For Bridge

I'll +1 the Distortion recommendation ..... but also will reinforce that pickup output is not the only factor in total volume and the ability to cut through the mix. The key is to match pickup output to your preamp input specs and chose a pickup with the correct tone spectrum to cut through well. This can be tough when you have two guitarists. I have found the JB to be very good at cutting through the mix although it's not as chunky, agressive and metal sounding as the Distortion.

Well it is the same coil configuration plus the mag...to me they don't sound very similiar though...maybe it's the aggression?
