New SG makes me nervous

Re: New SG makes me nervous

SG's are like beautiful women. They are not as fragile as they look. And they can and will kick your ass if you turn your back. Of course, if you drop them on their head you will break their necks.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

I've owned 7-8 Gibson Les Pauls and 4-5 Epiphone Les Pauls over the last 5 years and have been lucky that I have never experienced a headstock or neck break. Some things to keep in mind. 1) Get some strap locks, they are pretty reliable and they offer piece of mind that your guitar strap wont slip. 2) keep your guitar off of guitar stands. Some people may disagree but I feel that if you never put a gibson/epi on a stand that you remove any chance of it falling or being knocked over. 3) invest in a hard case. Gator, SKB, Gibson (TKL) cases are pretty good. Not bullet proof but pretty good. If transporting a rolled up cloth or shirt in the top might help cut down on movement. 4) If the headstock does break dont worry. Yes , it will diminish resale value but if taken to a luthier who knows what they are doing it can be repaired and is often stronger after being fixed. Hope to relieve some of your anxiety and offer a few things that have worked for me. Your results may differ.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

I have a friend who has a saying, no offense friend, but it goes like this: "don't be such a pussy man. "

I was pretty sure my firebird has the same joint so I pulled my SG out to compare.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

Historically, the SG neck joint issue is usually associated with the changes that Norlin introduced at the end of the Sixties and in the early Seventies. Poor contact in the tenon area and unwise neck pickup cavity positioning OCCASIONALLY resulted in the glue bond failing. This coincided with some cosmetic aspects of the guitar beginning to get a bit clunky.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

ya i hear ya on some of the Norlin era having some issues... my 76 Les Paul Deluxe had a bad glue joint on the tenon and it failed... you could wiggle the neck slightly but not pull it right out... they steamed it off, re-glued it , and rebuilt a new fingerboard for it...

my new sg has a few marks in it... will not be long before it totally loses the new axe smell...

Re: New SG makes me nervous

Just be careful if you drop it headstock first. The neck angle of Gibsons make breaking the headstock much more likely a possibility but I haven't had any such issue and I've played them for 30 years. But as I went to pick up my guitar from my tech he had a LP in the vise having the headstock repaired.

When A.Z. of all people is telling someone not to be a pussy, there is no longer any doubt that this forum resides in The Twilight Zone proper.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

Lightweight tuners seem to help more than adding weight to the other end, for neck dive. Of course getting 5 bolt-neck Epi Sg's for what one "real" SG goes for is an option, too  Seriously, the bolt neck ones sound pretty much the same and don't neck dive at all.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

For what it's worth, I bought my 74 SG as a "beater" because I didn't want my rick 360 to come to harm.

Truth is, both of them could survive atomic attack.

My 360 is my first love, but the SG is the most practical, durable, versatile warhorse of a guitar that I've ever owned. Get a few battle scars on it and you'll be OK.

I'm so used to neck dive now that I feel weird when it's not there.

Also, I do use strap locks (Schallers I think) on both my SGs, and I also prefer the shorter triangular stands over the tripod variety with the tall vertical brace that sits just below the headstock. I find them to be more stable and reliable; just my 2c.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

I've been playing for over 55 years...never broke a neck or headstock.

If you're going to use it for a sledge hammer, it would be better if it was made out of metal. But if you're going to use it as a guitar, wood will be just fine. Just don't get ridiculous.

I put Fender/Schaller strap locks on the top horn. More stable, no neck drop. Best, most secure, trouble free straplocks available.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

For the record, I don't really consider my SG to be particularly more fragile than any other guitar I own, but I know I do stupid things with my guitars all the time. Sometimes I am known to lay them down on a hard surface without proper support underneath the guitar. I get nervous doing this with an Ibanez. I would never in a million years do this with my SG unless I want to get b*tch slapped by six strings and a flying headstock.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

I love SGs, but I never put them in stands.

That's all I'm saying on the topic.

Re: New SG makes me nervous

i do have to say i have not owned a guitar that is so well intonated and stays in tune as well as this SG in a long time!...
