New SG neck joints

How weak are the new neck joints on the 61 reissues? As much as I like SG’s I always worried about the joint. And I see the new one is smaller.

Re: New SG neck joints

Its a small sample size but I have 2 a cherry red one I got around 99 and a black one I got around 012 and have had zero issues with the joints or stability. Of course i may have just been lucky, but i havent heard of any others having issues.

Re: New SG neck joints

I’ve owned a 61 reissue & shared your concern with the neck joint but it never gave me any problems...

In my situation the guitar played great the entire time I had it & it also took a fair amount of abuse over those few years without ever needing any kind of repairs...

Including taking a 5ft dive off a stage along with very drunk friend of mine whom was borrowing it to preform, & my bass player trying to use it to kill my drummer one rather epic evening!!!

Dude threw it across the room like a javelin in a meth fueled, blind fit of rage!!!

The man made me wonder if he was a former Olympian or something???

I responded with some choice words, then by throwing his bass out the window & actually getting it stuck in a tree, LOL!!!
I have pictures of it someplace, just hanging two stories up by it’s strap! I’ll see if I can find them to show you guys, actually quite a pretty picture because the sun is setting right behind the tree, kinda looks like a postcard, I always thought he should have left it there....

LOVE REMINISCING ABOUT THE GOOD TIMES!!!

Also solid guitar & as it turns out, quite aerodynamic as well!!!

Re: New SG neck joints

I’m building myself a neck through SG just to not have to worry about the neck joint. Lol

Re: New SG neck joints

Hopefully the neck joint is something that's not very accurate about the reissue. Ask the guy who got paid a bunch to reset the neck on my '62 why I say that... :)

How should we quantify the amount of weakness for you?

I'm looking at the "new" '61 neck joints, and they look like a classic early SG joint to me.

Pebbled back cover, modern strap buttons, cream binding, and large-post cast Gibson Deluxes – not very "1961." Then again, neither is a stop tailpiece.

Re: New SG neck joints

Thanks for the input guys. Weak may have been the wrong word I was thinking about stability. On the standard I had a year or so back I couldn’t keep it in tune. Even after a good setup. I usually use 11-52 strings down half a step. And and am heavy handed and use pretty high action. On the standard I had to retune after 10 minutes of use. If I chorded too hard or did a double bend closer to the heel the neck joint would flex. I thought I was just playing too hard on the slim neck. But I took it to a tech and he showed me that you could actually see the heel flex on the back of the body.
He said he had seen a lot do that. And after seeing a lot of stuff online about the neck joints cracking it made me a little nervous about them.

Re: New SG neck joints

Did you have the stock nut on that guitar?

I use 11s, with higher than average strings, and I'm a basher too. I don't find tuning any less stable on an SG than on any other type of non-locking guitar (e.g. Kahler or Floyd). I've owned three in my life, with three different heel styles, and the only major tuning issue has been from the Maestro Vibrola on my '68 Standard.

Re: New SG neck joints

Setup properly, continual tuning issues are more than likely the nut as said above
Any long necked instrument will flex to a degree, but it should remain more or less stable....the trussrod being at the right adjustment should ensure that alone.

Re: New SG neck joints

My ‘62 has a Maestro that does not get used, but it has, by far, the worst tuning stability of all my guitars. The angled string path at the headstock has a lot to do with that. I’ll quantify the weak neck joint by saying that if I hit the low E string and shake the guitar, there’s more pitch change than if you try to use the Maestro.
