I know Christian is right, but does anybody else think a million different signature Strats is kind of silly? Every other brand who does signature stuff (except Gibson) only markets the different stuff (ESP, Ibanez, Jackson, Schecter, etc...).

Help me out here...I'm not a big Mayer fan, but I saw a clip of him playing at Clapton's Crossroads festival and i could've sworn I saw a signature, possibly SRV's, on the headstock of Mayer's guitar.

If this is the case, how can Fender in good conscience, repackage a product they already have (the SRV signature Strat) into another signature strat that is basically the same as the first, for a guy with 1/10000th of the talent???

It's not exactly the same. The SRV has a pao fero fretboard, and a unique neck contour I believe.

his has different pickups as well......i played the Mayer strat, and its very hollow sounding, all bass and treble........whereas, the SRV strat has the texas specials, which i find overly middy........ but thats just my observations

Not so sure that's a sure thing either. I may not like the stuff Mayer records, but the guy has got some SERIOUS blues chops.

John's said quite a few times in interviews previous to the release of his signature strat that his number one electric guitar was an SRV model with a different pickguard on it.

The John Mayer is different than the SRV by a lot! The JM has a little/skinny neck with a rosewood fretboard, and the "Big Dipper" pickups have almost NO mids, it has a right handed bar, etc. All Strats are so different, and there are so many different kinds of Strat poickups tha you could have a hundred Strat signature models and they woujld all be different.

The neck is kind of deep, but it is pretty narrow (no more narrow that most vintage strats, 1 5/8 is the nut width). The storre I was at yesterday had 2 JM's and one had a smaller neck that the other one. Both felt pretty good but one was smaller for sure.

its different as people have stated, and John Mayer is an extremely talented musician/guitarist. his compositions may not seem so, but they are quite complex. his chops are awesome as well. i went to a blues show he did where he played only blues songs and he was amazing. he never took a break. every song he did he did some new lead thing. it was incredible. definitely, dont underestimate him. its just a shame that he doesnt record to his full potetial. if you can, download the song "covered in rain." great solo.

The EJ was nice, very nice in fact but I would still replace the pickups and to be honest my Jimmy Vaughan is a lot like the EJ but quite a bit cheeper! The JV has a radius of 9.5 vs the EJ's 12, the EJ has a nitro finish vs the JV's poly, the EJ does have a nicer/better tremolo (a Callaham trem would still be an upgrade) but the JV has the same trem that comes on the CS 57 and 62 reissues, which is IMO a great trem. In all honesty I like my JV better after the pickup change (I put a set of Custom Shop Duncans in it) new pots, switch, and a guardplate...after all the mods and the CS pups It cost me less that $750.00 and the EJ is just over $1600.00 :yell: The EJ has a lot of cool features and Eric is one pickup SOB, and it showed in his guitar...I did like the EJ but I didn't feel that it was a $1600.00 guitar!

I HATE the John Mayer music I've heard, but whenever I see him just play guitar, the guy has some serious talent, although he does sound like a SRV wannabe (which isn't a bad thing, and SRV's chops are difficult). I saw him on the Crossroads DVD, and he was pretty funny on Chappelle Show, including the outtakes. I like his tone and like him as a guitar player, it's a shame that his records don't reflect his true talent as a guitarist.

what about the pickguard do you just love?

The color, style, pattern...in short, the look. I've got a burst Strat as well and I think that pickguard would look really nice on my Strat as well.
