New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

I don't care if it's based on a broken Walkman.

It's an apartment-friendly all tube channel switching amp with a closed-back V30, and it sounds pretty good.

I'm impressed.

Also: Rebecca Dirks.

Yep and Yep!! Rebecca's got cute goin on

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

It says it is designed to get the tone of that album. marshall.says nail it, in fact.

Albums was a modded 2203, right? AFD100 is a modded 22xx? This SL5 is based on getting the tone those amps produce, right? Its inferred by the ad copy, but does not state it flat out, yes.

That said, I never stated it was supposed to be a 2203. I simply asked whether it was a 1959 or a 2203. And my comment above was "not very 800ish". Which it is not.

Edit- do not mean to sound terse, had to go change a poopy diaper and was typing fast, lol.

And no,not MY poopy diaper.

Some investigation was done recently and determined that Appetite for Destruction was recorded with SIR #36 instead of #39 which had previously been believed. The confusion here is natural because SIR didn't tell Slash that #39 wasn't available when he went to rent it; they simply sent #36 in its place. SIR #39 started out as a 1970 100W Super Trem which was then modded by Tim Caswell to use the extra tube as a gain stage since the tremolo was broken. A couple years later (after Tim left) SIR tried to copy #39 due to high rental demand; #36 was the result of this attempt. Since the amps looked quite similar, it's safe to assume that #36 was also an early 70s metal panel amp.

All that follows is speculation on my part... In Slash's autobiography he states that he tried to get the same amp to record Illusions but couldn't get the sound right; even in the same room with the same cabinet and microphone. I'm guessing that in this case SIR actually did send #39, but Slash wasn't happy with it because it wasn't the same amp he used on Appetite.

Gotta a link on that?

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

Wow. So it was not a 2203 after all? I do not know (nor frankly am I very interested in) the history of AFD the album, but I was under the impression that it was a 100w 800 series amp..whether a 2203 or 1959 NMV.

I wonder how many slashophiles over the years were confused about this and paid good money for 800s.

However this definitely makes more sense when it comes to his tone preference over the years for thr jooby/slash amps, vintage moderns, and.now the AFD amps. They all sound like heavily modded NMVs.

Re: New Slash 5watt signature combo from Marshall

IIRC, the AFD Slash head is based off a modded 800. I seem to recall that is what one of the techs said during the prototype stages in a video that was out. Slash was there too.

I had read as well that the amp used to record AFD was a modded Super Trem. I thought that was common knowledge.

Well, WTF..lol. the AFD album was recorded with a modded metalface...but the amp that is supposed to recreate that tone is based on a modded 800? I suspect lots of drugs are involved here, lol.

FWIW, those old super trems rock. Uli Roth used a stock super trem the whole time with the Scorpions.

Detailed history of #36 here. I don't remember which magazine this was printed in originally.

Ok, I totally misread what you had posted (and I quoted). I thought you were saying that the infamous #39 was in fact used (vs #36). However you were repeating what is now common knowledge (that Slash rehearsed with #39 , but recorded with #36)

There is a picture floating around of GnR rehearsing, and you can clearly see the Marshall Slash is using and "SIR" stenciled on the amp, and "#36" written on the gaffers tape.
