New Speaker Day: Cannabis Rex

Snake Aces

Singlecut Slut
I'm still waiting for the neck to arrive for my current Warmoth project but today my new Cannabis Rex arrived! I have used the Cannabis Rex in other amps in the past but I have not owned one in a few years since moving to Europe. I forgot how much I loved this speaker and it's not even close to being broken in yet. I played on it for a few hours since installing it and I can't wait to get back to it!

In recent years my Laney Cub has become one of my favorite amps I've ever owned but I was still using the stock speaker sadly. I finally decided to order a C-Rex for it last week and now the little Laney has really come alive! It's about time I put my favorite speaker of all time in what is becoming one of my favorite combo amps I've ever used. So much more articulation, way better lows and much, much smoother top end. I've used the C-Rex so I knew to expect this but it's so nice to hear it again!

Cheers to Laney and Eminence!

Right on! I have two in a vertical 212, and usually run my JC-20H through it. Smoother than an 18 year bourbon. Enjoy :headbang:

Re: New Speaker Day: Cannabis Rex

I need to check one of those out. I wish there was a way to test out a bunch of eminence and celestions somewhere.

Re: New Speaker Day: Cannabis Rex

What'd ya not like?
Mine sounds good to my ears

Yeah it had the HH. It sounded compressed, harsh and lacking low end to my ears. It kind of sounded like a tin can speaker to me.

It's worth checking this one out but +1 to wishing there was a way to try speakers out!

Re: New Speaker Day: Cannabis Rex

I love my Cub 10, and I agree that its stock speaker is among the worst I have ever heard in an amp. I have a new Jensen (Italian made) that I took from my PRRI in mine. Sounds great. A very nice little amp.

I agree, the HH is one of the worst stock speakers I've ever heard too. It's really too bad too because the Cub amps deserve a better speaker. They are real gems with a new speaker.

Re: New Speaker Day: Cannabis Rex

hmm

my Laney is from the mid 90's
and the HH speaker sound fine to me

hmm

so you think my favorite amp may sound even better if I swapped the Speaker?

you say yours was thin and bright?
mine is far from that

if anything its dark and thick, what I would consider a "Dark British" tone
must be the older model speaker

Yours is probably better for sure then. My amp is from 2013! I am sure a lot has changed (especially cost cutting) when it comes to speaker manufacturing. I don't doubt swapping the right speaker into your favorite amp would be awesome but if it ain't broke, why fix it?

Re: New Speaker Day: Cannabis Rex

Congrats on your new speaker. Eminence makes some of the best. Last Christmas I replaced the stock speaker in my Fender Champ 25SE with an Eminence Texas Heat. It really made the amp come alive. I've never tried the Cannabis Rex but have heard good things about it.

They may not be the same speakers, but the (2014) 50 watt HH ones in my Laney 4x12 sound pretty cool and more than get the job done. Full punchy bottom, nice rich/thick mids & non-shrill highs. They're kind of aggressively voiced (like a V30) but I like that. They're so good I'd buy a couple more If they were available retail (sadly not ..I've looked lol)

Having said that the Cannabis Rex is a great speaker. I have a friend who has one in an Orange 1x12 that he uses with his Tiny Terror & it sounds killer..Congrats :)
