New Speaker for a HellHound

My buddy who owns the HellHound I've been using is back from Australia. He has the amp back. He wants to put a new speaker in it.

He loves the tone of a Vibrolux and AC30 amps and wants to get in that neighborhood. Since he let me borrow his amp for two years I told him that I would buy the speaker for him. He even trusts me to pick one out. He said he's considered a Weber Blue Dog but he said he doesn't want me to buy him that expensive speaker.

Now, I trust you guys to help me with some recommendations. I'm thinking about getting an Eminence but am open to other suggestions. I'm just not sure which one to get.

The HellHound is a switchable 40/60watt amp with two 6L6's and two 12ax7's with one 12" speaker.

He plays a G&L strat and an HH Tele.

I'm wondering about the Eminence Screaming Eagle, Texas Heat, or the Red Fang. What do you think about those speakers?

Re: New Speaker for a HellHound

i have a texas heat and red fang, both are great speakers.

the red fang has some of that alnico blue thing going on but its only 30w

the texas heat might be a good choice as might the cannabis rex which both sound like some british/american style crossbreed with a big bottom. the rex is more efficient (louder) so if he wants more volume its a good option. the speakers dont sound the same but if you like one, youll probably like the other.

never tried the eagle.

a weber 12A150 would be the bomb though

Thanks Jeremy. That Weber looks like a great option.

As I thought about the options a little more the Celestion Greenback would be a considered too, right? Except the Greenback is a 25w.

The Screamin' Eagle is bright GT, but not spikey. It should be easy on the ears. It is middy, but not overly middy. It isn't strong on the bottom. If you have a dark amp, it is a good prescription.

Thanks Paul.

We (me and the amp owwner) both agree that the HellHound is a darker sounding amp. Then the Sceaming Eagle might be just the ticket. I'm glad to get a comment on the Eagle. Thanks.

Re: New Speaker for a HellHound

I'd contact Dave at Avatar speakers, because they sell Celestions under the relabeled name Hellatone. I think the Hellatone 30 is the G12H30 and the Hellatone 60 is a Vintage 30. Ask him which one he recommends, although I'd probably go for the tighter sounding Vin 30.

It's amazing that Avatar can sell Celestions so much cheaper than Celestion does. Same exact speaker, except the Hellatones are already broken in with acetone treated cones.

Re: New Speaker for a HellHound

The Governor is a "better" Vintage 30!it's wide but still tight ,the bottom is as big as the midds ,and the highs are not hurting your ears.Just plain awesome. If you like the V30 ,you're going to like teh Governor!

Update:

If anyone cares, I had a hard time deciding but I ended up ordering an Eminence Texas Heat and a Screaming Eagle. Hopefully, one of those will sound good in the HellHound. We'll find out. It'll be a fun learning experience.

Thanks for the recommendations.
