Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

"+1 On the Cannabis Rex. It has a very smooth, predictable response ... clean or dirty. Like Jeremy said, it starts a little tight and gets better with use.

Highly Recommended!"

Have one in my Blues Jr. and it totally changed that amp!!! Very smooth non-spikey, tighter bottom!!!

Cannabis Rex vs Jensen C12?
I side by sided two Fender Blues Jrs, one standard with Cannabis Rex and one tweed with Jensen c12. I spent $100 more to buy the tweed. The cannabis rex was a muddy mess compared to the Jensen. I also like the Jensen better than the Eminence special design 12 in the Fender Blues Deluxe. Take note that Fender prefers to load the Jensen into the high end custom 65 Deluxe Reverb, so they seem to like it better too.
Sorry, but not really. I love the new Jensens.

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

No doubt that Jensens seem to have a clearer top end. Though I don't think of the C-Rex as muddy, just with a more complex top end. Could the muddy be a result more of the Standard vs Tweed, perhaps accentuated by the speaker characteristics?

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

Standard vs tweed coloring the sound?

Hi Demanic,
I guess anything is possible, but my understanding of the Blues Jr III is that the design is identical electrically etc except one is covered in tolex and the other laquered tweed fabric.

Also I like the Jensen better than the standard Fender Blues Deluxe, which is covered in tweed but has an Eminence "special design" 12.

I felt like the Cannabis Rex was not as clear as the Jensen, so that is probably mostly mids and highs, as you pointed out. Look closely at Fender's overall line and you will find that they now offer a lot of their old school top of the line stuff with a Jensen. In reviews of the Deluxe Reverb, I have seen specific recommendations "to be sure to get the one with the Jensen"
I would really like to appreciate the CRex because the cone is made from hemp and that is kind of cool, but suspect that the Jensens in general are a tighter speaker with more clean headroom...which if I understand what I read is more like the Swamp Thang.
Lotsa fans of both style cones.

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

i like the cannabis rex for its fat jazzy sound but its only rated to 50 watts and the two 6l6s in a hot rod can put out more than the 40w spec.
They are also a notoriously loud amp.
I prefer the texas heat for this application. Its not as efficient as the cannabis and not quite so bass heavy so you get the luxury of being able to drive your tubes a little harder before the sound engineer gets upset. Its is rated to 150watts so it can handle anything the amp can dish up no problems. I like the cannabis for the 6v6 fender style amps, but for the 6l6, i prefer texas heats. They are thick, throaty but still with enough twang. Excellent for taming unruly and loud clean channels. Really great for crunch too. They hold together great.

The jensen c12n? Ive done that too with an hrd. Not my bag. Thinner in the mids and quite a bright high end. Definitely much much better than the emi special design fender oem speaker, but there are quite a lot of other speakers out there that i prefer. Johnthomas, you are right that the cannabis is a darker speaker than the jensen and that might not be everyone's cup of tea. For something a bit more in that clangy clear jensen vein, the eminence red white and blues is cool too. Still i reckon for a hot rod, or a twin reverb, the texas heat cant be beat.

I'd like to add another vote for C. Rex. It isn't bright, but certainly isn't muddy either. Very clean, clear sound that works great for blues and jazz.

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

EDIT: I saw later that the OP which I was responding to below, was all set long ago, that Rick330Man resurrected a 7 year old thread. Oh well.

I would like to change the stock speaker on my 1x12 fender hot rod deluxe combo. Please keep in mind i am aiming to improve the (already nice) clean tone of the amp as i don't care and do not use the other 2 channels of the amp since i am getting all my distorted sounds from pedals. So my main goal is to have THE best clean sound as a basis and work from there with my pedals.

Could you please advice me on some good clean speakers with good headroom(no thanks, V30 are excluded :scratchch).

Most people i talked to said that the Eminence tonker is a nice clean speaker but judging from eminence's tone guide

http://www.eminence.com/pdf/tone_guide.pdf

and some online samples

http://www.eminence.com/soundclips.asp

i am afraid that it might be a little bit dark????Is that the case?

Per Wikipedia, Fender changed the stock speaker in these amps starting in 2010, going from a
Eminence Legend 125 50 Watt (special design) to a
Celestion G12P-80 (Hot Rod Deluxe III) in Year 2010. Which of the two does your amp have?

Also, it will help give to give you better recommendations if you can describe what it is about the current speaker that you don't like.

I had a pre-2010 Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue amp (same clean circuit as the Hot Rod, and same speaker), and last year I went through the search for identifying a better speaker. In my case, I thought the stock Eminence speaker was too shrill, had zero low end aspect to its tone when jamming with a drummer and keyboard player, and I wanted more mid scoop when doing high gain sounds. What I arrived at for a speaker choice might not be a fit for you if your complaints about the stock speaker are different.

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

I have no complaints with my '95 HRD that has the original Eminence Legend in it. 99% of its usage is on the clean channel (use pedals for dirt.)

From what I've read and heard, the Cannabis Rex is better suited for the Blues Jr. BUT I have not personally tried one in my Hot Rod Deluxe to say the amp was too powerful for the speaker.

Re: Νew speaker for Fender hot rod deluxe

I've got a C. Rex in a Traynor YCV40 which is a 2x6L6 40 watt tube amp similar to an HRD. No issues for several years now.
