New speaker on the way

For my DRRI. Went with a greenback variant, a Weber 12M. Asked for the "pre-rola" treatment and for them to break it in for me.

I figured out that I really want to focus on getting good breakup at moderate volume with my strat as my main weapon. I'm essentially turning my DRRI into a dirtier amp and I'll get some more mids as a bonus.

So to go with this, I pulled v1, and used that 12AX7 as my PI. It seems now that the amp breaks up on 5 like it used to on 6 (which is barely any breakup), and the whole thing is warmer. On 10 through an attenuator (so no speaker breakup) it's still pretty light crunch, so I figure that the speaker breaking up will give it a thick throaty "dirty blues" sound on about 7 or so.

Combining this with the Les Lius is sure to produce some interesting tones. Less "vintage"... more RAWK

Anyways I specifically went with a weber because
1) celestions use a frame with 4 mounting bolts. The drri has 8 stuck in the baffle. I'm lazy.
2) celestion charges an arm and a leg for a "heritage" version of the G12M. Weber's $10 pre-rola treatment on their greenback clone seems like an affordable alternative.
3) Weber has a good reputation
4) hand built in USA baby!

will review it when I get it.

Re: New speaker on the way

sweet, should sound good

also, i dunno if you use the amp's tremolo, but if not there's a mod to install a pot in there with a switch to take it out of the circuit and that adds about as much gain/warmth as the v1 thing

Re: New speaker on the way

neat. Well we'll see where I am when the speaker gets here. I still need a little headroom so that the crunchbox doesn't turn things into a muddy mess.

I use the tremolo occasionally but I'm not married to it.
