If you want lots of headroom then I'd start by putting Sovtek 5751s in place of the 12AX7 preamp tubes. These will smooth out the preamp gain stages giving you a chiming clean effect. JAN-Phillips 6L6WGBs will deliver great harmonics and bell clear tones. Lots of headroom if you bias to about 62mV (before anyone has a heart attack, this is measured at the bias test point on the HRD and is a combined voltage reading).

i looked on musicians friend and well, i can't find half the tubes you've mentioned, haha, where can i get them?

also, what kind of eminence speaker should i go for, i guess my platform for good distortion would be good lows, explosive mids, and pretty good highs

k, got the hot rod deluxe, great amp, overall very happy. However, its sounding kinda muddy, and i remember about a month or so ago peopel telling me that the speaker & tubes were what was holding the hotrods back. So someone care to reccomend me either? its 40 watts, 8 ohms, 1x12, i need something pretty cross genre, like i've said before, everything from hardcore punk to pretty-as-can-be indie rock

please leave explanations with your reccomendations

just sell the HRD and get a used Marshall 4X12 and nice used jcm 800. problem solved. MrHM :smokin:

i don't like marshalls

you have to spend like over a grand to get a DECENT one


note to texas: the 6l6's look good, but do they have a lot of punchy midrange? that's very very important. it also says they're 25 watt tubes, this won't quiet the amp at all, will it?

but about the sovteks, it says they're quieter, does that mean actual volume or does it mean they just don't overdrive as soon?

also, i'm still looking for a speaker reccomendation. Assuming the 6l6's have the punchy midrange i want, i'd like some that really bring out the best in them, and maybe also take a little more muddy sound out of the deluxe as it is now, if necessary, i'm not sure if these tubes alone will do it

here's some songs where the guitarist kinda has the tone i'm going for. I want a little more punch & a little more crunch than what they have but it may be a usefull reference

i guess now would be a good time for a reminder that I'm playing a basswood guitar with a set neck, rosewood fretboard, and the pickup i use for distorted stuff is a 59 in the bridge position
