New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

Hi everyone !

I'm searching for new speakers for a Marshall SLP clone often played with Big Muff or Fuzz Face in front of it. I have G12T-75 in a Marshall JCM900 Lead 1960 4x12 cab which are very nice speakers but maybe too much modern sounding.

I'd like something really organic, sweet, really vintage/old school (Think Black Keys for exemple...), with more lows as possible.

Warehouse Guitar Speaker seems to be a great choice, inexpensive and very good quality, but I don't know what to choose... Green Beret ? ET65 ? Other ?
Or another brand ?

What you would recommend me ? I watch Youtube videos for hours but I still don't know what would sound best with my own gear ! :guilty:
Plus this is the first time I choose new speakers ! :newbie: I always used what was sold in the cab, so... Not easy to find my way.

Thanks a lot :18:

If you want old school you want Green Berets since they're WGS' version of the G12M Greenback. However, since you only have a single 4x12 and you're running a 100 watter, I'd suggest going with the Invader 50 since that's their higher wattage version of the Green Beret and will be able to handle the fact that an SLP will actually peak well beyond 100 watts if cranked.

Yes, but I forgot to mention that I'd like to run only 2x12 ! I'll close the holes or leave 2 other speakers but unplugged (Maybe I'll keeping a pair of G12T-75 inside... Or buying 2 more Invaders in the futur).

Still go Invader ?

Thanks a lot for your answer :)

With an amp, like a non master volume Marshall, that you intend to crank you'd want your speakers to be able to handle twice the "advertised" wattage of the amp. Realistically, a 1959 can put out up to 180 watts when dimed, depending on the B+ voltage supplied to the plates of the power tubes (this varied over the course of manufacture, tending to be lower in the late '60s). That's why most people playing 100 watters in the '60s and '70s used a full stack setup since G12Ms could handle 25 watts each and G12Hs could handle 30. Then the G12-65s came out, but those sounded pretty different.

Typically, higher wattage speakers tend to sound more modern until you start looking at speakers, like Scumbacks, that really work on keeping the classic flavor with a higher wattage.

That said... In my opinion, almost anything is better than a G12T-75. LOL

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

Ok ! But this one has been modded with a PPIMV, I asked my friend to do this until he sold it to me, it was a smart move because those amps are louder than hell ! lol
Buuuut I think it sounds different without the PPIMV ! More open !

If I understand 2 x 25 Watts speakers are really not enough, but 2 x 50 Watts are OK if I not crank it to 10, right ? If I want to push it really far I need 4 x 50 Watts, right ?
If the wattage is lower than needed what should I expect ? A real problem or the speakers will just distorted ?

I'll start with 2 Invaders, I follow your advice, and I'll see what speakers (Or 2 more Invaders) I add in the 4x12 later this year. I don't have any gig planned so I'll only use it for recording at moderate volume.

In my opinion, almost anything is better than a G12T-75. LOL
Ever tried the G12M-70 ? :knockedou

Thanks again, you really helped me :D

I usually play it safe myself since you never know when you'll accidentally bump a knob.

Actually, I have a Peavey 412MS cab loaded with Sheffield 1290s that are supposed to have been based on the G12M-70s. I quite like them.

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

I've got 4 invaders in a 4X12 that I feed mostly with a Marshall (copy). I really like the Invader. WGS doesn't really do the "clone" thing. Well, they may with a few models but they are more about putting their own twist on things than trying to make exact copies. Point being, if you are looking for a higher powered CLONE of the Celestion G12M, the Invader isn't it.

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

They're expensive but the Scumbacks seem to have the right vintage flavor with higher power handling.

There certainly is a twist but they seem to keep it in the family.

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

I like the sound of greenbacks for plexis. My 50w head sounds perfect in my 100w 4x12 at all volume levels.

For that Hendrix plexi sound and AC/dc crunch, greenbacks.

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

Is there really any other choice aside from 4 Celestion Greenbacks for an amp like this????

LOL, sorry I couldn't resist!!!

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

If you want Celestion sounds- WGS is not the place to go (despite their marketing hype). They are very different from their Celestion counterparts. Good or bad is for individuals to decide.

It's like people who think their first PRS will sound just like a Gibson. :buzzer:

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

I really don't give a damn if it's Celestion, WGS or whatever as long as it smells dirty Blues, dust and blood when I close my eyes :18:

Yeah Scumbacks are not in my budget right now... But definitely on my wish list !

That said, Celestion, everybody got Celestions, they're great but that's kinda boring to have all the same gear... That's why I wanted to choose something a bit more different.
So here in Europe, WGS are not all over the place like Celestion so that was a good alternative, not expansive and still easy to find (Online in Germany especially) without spending 150$ for shipping + f***ing taxes.

I'm watching this shoutout by gearmandude :

The 3 best in order (To me) : Green Beret, ET65, Veteran. So I guess Invaders are still the winner as they are Green Beret but "Sweeter and creamier", that sounds good to me.

But if you got any other suggestion, I'm all ears !

Thank you guys, that's very hard to find such knowledge and advices over here :fest6:

I was going to suggest V30/G12H-75 creamback, but you don't sound like you want Celestions.

If the Scumbucks are an issue due to price, you can look at Eminence. The Private Jack and Wizard get a lot of praise for being best bang for buck while delivering that British flavor. Sorry, no experience with WGS.

FWIW, I'm pushing a Supro Tremoverb with a Wampler Tumnus through a 1x12 loaded with a G12H-75. Black Keys for days.

OR...may I humbly suggest an Eminence Tonker and a TonkerLite? Listed in the trading post right now. Thunderous lows, handle 150 & 120 watts EACH. (Yes, I'm the one selling them. If this sort of shameless plug is a no-no then please delete.)

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

I've had Celestion, Eminence, and WGS speakers in my 2x12 cabinet in the last year and they all sound different but the WGS speakers sound as good to me as the others. However, I agree that they do not sound identical to the Celestion speakers they identify with. (ALTHOUGH my Celestions were from 1978; I don't know if the new China-built ones sound the same as the old ones either.)

As far as I can tell they are all quality speakers. I only swapped out the Celestions because they finally wore out, and I only swapped out the Eminence Tonkers because I decided to go for a snottier rock and roll tone. As long as these WGS speakers (et65 and Veteran 30) last a long time I will be happy. If they don't, I'll replace them with the equivalent model Eminence speakers.

Re: New speakers for Plexi clone... I'm lost !!

I'm not against Celestion, I was thinking that maybe it would be more "original" to choose another brand !

I'm gonna check the Eminence, but to mess the game a little bit more, what about Plexi + Jensen ?? C12R sounds quite interesting but I'm afraid it's too bright...
