USPS.... Makes me so nervous sometimes...

But they survived somehow.

I'll probably be harder on them.

Re: New speakers today

Nice speakers, but man those boxes are badly bashed up. I live in the UK and shop online a lot. Thankfully the delivery services over here handle boxes a lot better than USPS does. I would have been pretty worried and annoyed if I received anything in that condition.

Re: New speakers today

Man
If I weren't so cheap I would have gotten one of those last month

But here we are

I'm sure they will sound great

Did those take a big chunk out of you entertainment allowance?

If you got a deal
Post a link

I may still want one

Re: New speakers today

I think the Hellatones from Avatar are a pretty good deal. Shipping and breaking-in included at a discount? Win-win.

I got both of them off reverb for 178 bucks I think.
They were the only 2 the guy had.

They are going into my Marshall cabinet here at the house.
I'll be taking out a warehouse veteran and a t75, both in great shape.
I'll stick one in a box and mail it to you pretty reasonably if you want bud.

Re: New speakers today

How long until these v30 speakers break in? Eff...

They are still pretty shrill after About 6 hours on them cranking pretty loudly... Well 115 decibels for 3 nights in a row now... If that's loud or not .

3 nights??? They likely still won’t be 100% broken in after 3 months although they should soften up some by then? V30’s take years to properly break in but once they do they are easily one of the best speakers on the market!

I also just bought a pair of new ones & I’m really not excited about the breaking in period. I’m probably going to stick mine into my 2X12, stick the 2x12 into my buddies isolation booth, & run some garbage 90’s EMI music through a SS amplifier head for a week. We did the same thing to a pair that he’d bought like a month ago & the results were pretty decent....

And there's also the variac method. But an isolation booth is also required because that 60 hz hum is loud enough to rattle the walls and get the neighbors calling the cops. Moreover, it must done for at least 24 hours, possibly in two shifts to heat cycle the voice coil.

From just playing loud for an hour or two a day it will take years. It really takes years to thoroughly break in a speaker anyway because part of a great sounding speaker is simply aging. But some kind of accelerated break in procedure is needed to make the initial new speaker period bearable to those of us who hear it.

Not to hijack this thread, but Ive been considering trying a V30 in my Avatar 2x 12 in place of one of the 75s in there now.
The break in period worries me a bit as I rarely play. So you hit a chord (pun intended) when you mentioned the Hellatones being broken in. The sound similar to the V30s?

Congrats on your new speakers 80s metal! And congrats that they survived the abusive journey to you!

I haven’t done it, but the internet has examples showing that the Hellatone 60 is just a sticker on top of the Vintage 30 label. And it sounds great!

Re: New speakers today

I hooked my stereo into my valvestate clean channel and let it roar at pretty high volume for a few hours with a thumping song on repeat.
Then I let it cool down about an hour then ripped it up again for about 4 more hours with a different stop-start kind of song even louder.

I bet my neighbors hate me.

Tonight I'll go see if they've rounded out a little bit more.
