Hey i was looking at the Splawn site the other day and i came across this

"Competition"
Splawn Competiton Head
50 watt
Rhy , Lead channel with solo boost,
Effects Loop
Three button footswitch w/LED's
F/S functions
#1 Gear 1 & 2
#2 OD1 & OD2
#3 Solo Boost
Heyboer Transformers
Mullard EL34's $1300.00
Sovtek KT88's $1350.00
JJ KT88 Upgrade $50.00

Scott made a more affordable version of the Quick Rod?
i think that is a totally great idea to make it more accesable to everyone!
good stuff.
has anyone heard anything about this amp?

Hats off to Splawn. i would have definately bought a Quick Rod if i had a Dealer here in Greece. I just have this thing that i MUST hear an amp before i purchase it. Other than that Scott has the best attitude!

Re: New Splawn Amp?

That amp has been up for about a month, I would say.

It's not exactly like the QR; less wattage, and only 2 voicings (instead of 3), no 1/2 power switch, dunno if it does voltage switching ... otherwise, it appears to be a killer head.

The name 'Competition' says it all, I guess, since it's meant to compete with the more affordable heads out there.

Re: New Splawn Amp?

yep..no third gear, no clean...only 50 watts....and you can either get it with el34's or kt88's..so it'll either be a 50 watt version of the older QR or pro mod

oh, and the really cool thing about this is that you can switch between first and second gear with the foot pedal....since there's no clean, that button on the footpedal is used to switch gears...which is pretty cool....

Yeah, that's a nice touch!

definetly a nice touch =) even though I'm in third gear all the time, it would still be cool to mess around with =D dunno if he could get it to work on a three gear model pm or QR even with a 4th foot switch button though..oh well, no biggie...perfectly happy with my amp =)

Re: New Splawn Amp?

It should sound identical to 2nd gear with the gain cranked. Which is plenty of gain for most all types of rock/metal etc.. no half-power switch cause its only 50 watts. Another great idea from Scott.

Re: New Splawn Amp?

Only what, about $400 under a Quick Rod? This thing looks cool, but I still think I'll be eyeing the QR when/if the time (rather, money) comes.

Is the half power switch on the QR like an on-board attenuator? How's it work?

I think it's a switch that takes 2 of the power tubes out of the circuit, but I'm not sure. It's an industrial-strength switch on the back of the amp.

going with the QR is a good move ;)

and TO was right..half power takes the two outside power tubes out of the equation....

Re: New Splawn Amp?

If the half-power switch is anything like on a Marshall, then this is how it works.

Q: What is the Output Mode Switch (100/50 on the 2100, 50/25 on the 2500)?
A: This answer comes right from the manual: Switches the amplifier from high to low power output. The “low” setting configures the output stage to “triode” operation, which gives half the rated output (i.e. 25 Watts on 50 Watts models - or 50 Watts on 100 Watt models). The “high” power position gives “pentode” operation for the full rated output.

I like the looks of the specs of the Competition.

Re: New Splawn Amp?

?? dunno about that triode pentode stuff..but all it does on scott's amps is shuts off the outter two power tubes....

maybe that's sayin' the same thing, I have no idea...lol..but that's what he told me...

If that's what Scott told you then that's different than what Marshall does. With the Marshalls, all the tubes are still being used, just the mode is changing from Pentode (high power setting) to Triode (low power setting).

I gotcha...yeah, they're definetly different in that respect..

he even told me that if you're gonna run it at half power ALL THE TIME to just take out the outter two tubes and save them....I only use half power at home and I used full power at gigs...sometiems at home too if I'm feeling adventurous..lol

Hehe. I'm on high power all the time. There's not much of a volume difference between high and low so I just leave it on high. If it needs to be turned down, that's what the MV is for. :D

yep =)

it's not that much of a difference, but being able to run the master just a wee bit higher on 50 watts sounds better to me at bedroom levels

Re: New Splawn Amp?

yeah, too bad i dont have a dealer here or in England at least.
next time i go to the states i will try real hard to listen to one.

for now i ordered a VHT Deliverance as i was really impressed by its tone!

Scott had the best attitude though when i contacted him. would love to be a client.
