Mercury Transformers??

Re: Mercury Transformers??

If it were blown, sure look at getting a replacement. OEM replacements are about $50, but buying a $300 transformer for a $600 amp seems kinda silly.

Well, the tone IS all about the OT, but yeah, I agree.

Re: Mercury Transformers??

I think probably Marsten and definitely Heyboar is much better than Mercury Magnetics , cause I've done significant of research- looking for a good output Transformer for my Tweed Twin clone. Not all companies make every model of transformer, so you might have to settle. Heybaor is the best from what limited knwoledge I have of the subject..

limited knowledge of the subject is right. what exactly makes heyboer better than mm?

He was the chief designer for crate/slme in the late 80’s and 90’s. He was behind their vintage club series amongst others.

Re: Mercury Transformers??

The biggest difference between most of those companies quality wise is usually the bobbin material they choose to use, and the aesthetic finishing. Bobbin material is debatable from a mechanical and tone perspective as to which is better. other than that, they all mostly use the same grade of steel laminates and wire. Just like pickups, the rest lies in the wind, and how or if they choose to interleave, or how many laminates they stack, core size etc...

Most of the replacement transformers each company sells are all similar because they are trying to mimic the original with updated materials.

Also keep in mind that the transformers used in sought after vintage guitar gear would not be considered high quality by today’s standards. Most used horribly inefficient and lossy material, and were not the best of the best for their time either so that’s one thing to consider.

The big question is, of course...

Who packs their OT with the most magic smoke?

Re: Mercury Transformers??

I'm good with Magnetic Components / Classic Tone. No magic smoke but affordable, made in the USA and just fine by me.

i got to meet obeid a few times while he was at slm, very cool guy. he built a "crate" amp for billy gibbons to use but billy wasnt feeling well so i got to sit in and use it. sounded great!! it was basically an 18w marshall in a solid pine box covered in leather and lizard skin with a crate badge on it :)

Classic tones are built the same way heyboer and others are the only difference is in the business model, which lets classic tone offer a better price break on their transformers. They also nabbed some of the engineers from Schumacher when Schumacher started to go south. We worked with joe Janisch, the president of CT, to produce the first two initial project style transformers and now its a whole line.

Re: Mercury Transformers??

I had a blown OT in my 68 Vibro Champ and replaced it with a Mercury Magnetics 55 Tweed model OT and it sounds excellent.
