new strat pups

i need some advice:

i'm thinking about putting new pups in my 40th anniversary standard strat. everything on it is stock. i like a thick blues sound (a la warren haynes, derek trucks, etc.) and was considering either a hot rails or little 59 in the bridge, and whatever you guys think in the middle and neck positions. since i mostly do my playing in the 1 and 5 positions, i was wondering if i should even bother with changing the middle pup. and advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Re: new strat pups

My advice? Get a Gibson. :)

Joking. I would think that a full set of Cool Rails or Lil' 59's would get you in the ballpark.

Re: new strat pups

actually...i've got a 2003 sg with a jb/59 set. the strat is my first though. so i figured instead of selling, why not make it my better? thanks for the reply.

Hey pickngrin16,

Welcome to the Forum!!!

I'd bypass the Hot Rails if you want thick blues, HR is more heavy rock.
I think the lil59 is gonna get the sound you desire, in both positions. If you want a perfectly matched set (IMO) get the Antiquity Texas Hots for the neck/mid and the Antiquity Custom for the bridge. This trio just oozes the blues & has balls to spare. Check 'em out. Good luck.

Peace,

Darrin

I don't think any Strat pickups, even minihumbuckers like Little 59's or JB Jrs, are going to make your Strat sound like Warren Hayne's Les Paul with full size humbuckers. Ain't gonna happen.

Even my Strat with the PG neck and 59 TB bridge doesn't really sound like a Les Paul, but that's the kind oif pickup change needed to get a Strat into Les Paul territory: a pair of real full size humbuckers.

But I do like Darrin's suggestion of the Antiquity Texas Hots. Those are what I recommend for players looking to get away from the glassy bright tone of most Strat pickups and into a tone with more power, more mids and a smoother less biting tone that lets a player shape the note more with his touch.

The Antiquity Texas Hots just ooze personality and vibe too. I'm using an Antiquity Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup with my Surfers right now and it's way less glassy and much more touch responsive than a typical Strat bridge pickup.

I haven't tried the Duncan Pickup Booster, but maybe that would be a help too. Or a Boss DS-1.
