New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

Hi guys my first post here. I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and in that time my tastes have changed from big hair metal to more classic rock & prog rock. For many years i played DiMarzio pickups but now i would like to change.

I have a PRS Moderen Eagle II with a mahogany body and maple top.....its a beauty !!! So i am looking for X2 hum buckers that coil tap too for this guitar. My knowledge of SD pickups is OK but not great, with little actual playing/hearing experience.

I know its the age old tough question but does anyone have a guide to start me off with as to which choice, or indeed which not to go for.

My aim is to get a big, fat, warm tone without too much top end sizzle. I play everything from cleans to hard rock, nothing to metal or super high gain, i want above anything good articulation and a more les paul fat tone than anything else.

fave players for what i am trying to achieve are Guthrie Govan, His tone is fat and warm but very clear and i also like Joe Bonamassa for this too.

Any help would be very very much appreciated guys.
Thank you
Matthew

Welcome to the forum!

Correct me if I am wrong guys, but it sounds like a 59 + something else would do the job, right? (I am also learning about this).

Re: New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

Thanks guys for your input so far it's all good advice, the 59 seems to crop up a lot as a golden tone, how would you guys rate the Joe a Bonamassa set ?

I have one set of Bonamassas and installed in a Warmoth Royale - somewhere between vintage and jazzy, in my opinion a beautiful sound. A favorite of mine and also those that use my guitars. Great choice.

If you buy new, SD has the exchange policy that could be handy while you figure it out. Many of the people here have figured it out by just trying one model after another over time. Maybe that could work for you too.

Re: New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

What specifically don't you like about the X2s and about the original PRS pickups?

Re: New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

Yeah that exchange idea could work well, does it extend to the uk? Diminished Triad, the Bonamassa set you have would you say they are really a vintage blues rock set, are they they happy being a tad more rock. I am looking for moderate to hot on the output but not super hot metal style. The PRS pickups I had in I felt were a tad weak and thin, the neck didn't have that fat warmth like. I was wondering if I should start with a JB and a Jazz to get the feel of SD pickups, they seem to be a popular choice, what's anyone's thoughts on this set in a PRS ?

Re: New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

My first suggestion would be the Whole Lotta Humbucker set. I don't have first hand experience, but they're supposed to be something of a fatter 59 type sound.

Re: New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

Diminished Triad,
Please opine on the bridge Bonamassa pickup. He is very picky (in a good way) and he can afford to experiment with Mr. Duncan and MJ on such things, and the fact that they settled on an A3 magnet + whatever wind for the bridge sounds like it might just be the difference between the WLH hot bridge and the more conservative Seth Lover or Antiquity bridge in the so-called PAF range of humbuckers. I am very curious.
Thank you not only on my behalf but hopefully the OP's behalf as this is his thread, and I don't want to hi-jack it.

Re: New to Forum and to Seymour Duncan

Well Guthrie currently plays a super strat with custom pups in it that aren't available to anyone unless you buy his sig guitar and JB plays vintage LPs with anything from vintage PAFs to his custom SD pups.

I would recommend the A2P set or the A2P Slash set. Another set that I think would work for what you want if you can get past the non traditional look is a PATB-3 Blues model in both the bridge and neck.
