New (to me) Amp - Help needed!

Hey all,

Yesterday, I got a used Traynor YVC40 WR amp via ebay.

When I plug in to the main input, I get a very soft sound from my guitar. The tone and loudness of this sound is not affected by channel switching or by the volume / gain controls. At other times, I hear a few scratchy sounds with no sound from my guitar.

No matter what sound I hear from the pre-amp, the The power amp works great. Using my GT-8, I get great sounds from the power amp. So I know that the power amp is fine.

Anyone have any ideas?

Start with the easiest things first. Try swapping out the pre amp tubes.

Put a cable in the effects loop.

So I took the back off, and checked the tubes. And what do you know, one of them had the snow cone effect on the top - sign of the broken tube. I touched it and felt the glass broken. Took it out, swapped a JJ 12AX7 equivalent, and bingo, it works (mostly) great.
