New (to me) Gibson design.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.
Love Explorers.
Hate this piece of crap!
Bit of EVH Destroyer, bit of Hamer Scarab, and a whole lot of poor taste.
More style-less rubbish from the people who once ruled progressive guitar design. Unfortunately, that was 50 years ago.

I remember reading somewhere, (might have been the first Guitar Player mag. interview in ....er....'78???) EVH saying one of the dumbest things he ever did was taking the chunk out of the back of the Destroyer. It just ruined the tone and sustain of the guitar.
+ 1, read that recently, He admits to completely ruining the tone of the guitar.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

I never liked the ML and was never really a fan of the Warrior.
I found the Xyphos being just ok on account of being pointier all around and a more balanced design but this one has neither of those qualities.

I do like the headstock quite a bit (a sharper Explorer headstock) but the rest of it is just "out of balance".

While I do appreciate the effort in the end it's a fail IMO.

Have the tables been turned?

sosomething:

you buy the guitar that was made in America because it was made in America.

i'm not really defending the guitar's design or whatever -- i grew out of pointy 'metal bad-ass' guitars before i lost my virginity...i'm just saying, for the people who DO like that kind of thing, it's nice that they have the option to do the Gibson thing.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

If only this were 1981...

In a way, it is. Remember the Gibson Corvus? (Looked like a can opener!) Gibson is probably hoping that you have forgotten that li'l sucker.

Also, reminds me a bit of the Fender Musiclander. That had a weird lump hacked out of its body outline too.

Final thought. How long before an endorsee artiste insists on having one made the other way up and with three single coils on it? :D

Ya know, that makes so much more sense :)

I wonder if Fender will ever consider revisiting the Katana?

Of all the odd things Gibson have done down the years I don't think they've ever done anything quite as god awful as that :)

Referring to the Ibanez Paul Gilbert Reverse Iceman?

Even though a Floyd would make it look better, the Sharkfin is still UGLY like the ESP Mustaine Axxion. The reverse headstock is cool though.

But didn't the initial run of explorers and flying v's get stopped because they were so unpopular?

I'll give them some amount of credit for trying to make something new, although I think it's butt ugly, made of cheap scrap wood and wouldn't buy it at even half the price... But I think explorers and v's are ugly too, so what do I know?

No.

You don't.

You buy <products> that are made in America because <those products> are superior to in quality to <imported products>.

The second you, as a manufacturer, start thinking that consumers will "buy the product that was made in America because it was made in America" is the second you lose your ass to an overseas-based competitor.

Don't believe me?

Visit Detroit some time.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

I think it's kinda cool. i'd pick one up at a store.

and I remember reading about EVH's destroyer too. He DID say he ruined the tone. He said it was really fat and chunky, then when he took the chunk out it got all thin and strat like.

Re: New (to me) Gibson design.

what bugs me is that Gibson should try these goofy designs first at about $500 and with a headstock that says epiphone. If and when they fly out the door then do some limited runs as a made in US Gibson.. People rip on my Sonex, but at least thats a tried and true design(LP) and sounds pretty decent to most who have tried out mine..

Yes. How did you guess? ;) The Ibanez Fireman. Extremely limited edition. Price of a tidy pre-owned car. Wonder whether Paul McCartney will sue over the name? :D

My biggest beef is that it's ... wood scraps and they are promoting that like its a great thing.

That's commerce! Seriously, though, read "Fender - The Inside Story" by Forrest White. You'd be amazed what can be done with wood scraps and promotion. ;)

Aye but would you give the store proprietor any of your own money for it? ;)

Well, right now it isn't my thing. But when I was in my soloing-all-the-time shred and metal phase, If i played it and liked it id consider it.

It's WAY too expensive though. it also has 500t as the bridge humbucker, which i have on my flying v.

that i didnt pay 1,500 for.

I was teasing.

It is extremely easy to be tempted to purchase guitars. Only yesterday, I declined an offer of a Gibson LP Special/Junior ... probably because, three days ago, I bought a near-mint 1995 Stratocaster.

Nuts! Now I have to do even more overtime.

haha. but really, like someone said, if they put the epi name on this (AND KEPT THE HEADSTOCK, I ****ING HATE THE EPI HEADSTOCK SHAPE!!) and sold it for 400-500, people would go for it.
