New to Strats - possibly a new Strat owner soon.

Quick question for all you Strat lovers / owners out there.

Is it possible, to make a Jaguar bridge pick up fit into a MIM Strat bridge cavity/pick guard ?

I looked for images in the net but could not find anyone who did this 'mod' and posted images anywhere.

Many thanks to all.

Is there a specific reason you want a jaguar pickup seeming most decent ones are at boutique prices? I reckon someone could wind a jaguar style pickup in a strat format. Not sure if you can directly swap them I'm guessing the claws would be problematic

Yes, I've done it. But... Jaguar claws/covers won't fit, and neither will Strat covers because the pole spacing is different. So if you're ok going uncovered, you should be fine. Also, because most Jaguars are direct-mount your standard Strat mounting screws might be too small (or who knows they might not. Japanese Jaguar pickups have very large holes, but my newer set of Duncan SJAG-2s was fine with Strat screws.)

Please be aware, there is little difference in terms of tone, between a Strat and Jaguar pickup; the bobbin is slightly narrower/thinner/taller, but it's otherwise identical to a Strat pickup most of the unique Jaguar tone comes from that guitar's construction.

Yeah, I am not understanding why the pickup is the focus of the Jag's tone, as, by itself, it is so close to a Strat. I always thought the other factors (bridge, body, etc) that gave the Jag its unique sound. However, the Custom Shop can make you a jag pickup in a Strat housing.

I just prefer the ''classic'' Jaguar bridge tone to that of a ''classic'' Strat tone - to be very honest !

Great . . . thank you very much.

Very useful info.

I have no problem in filing/sanding the bridge hole of the start pick guard bigger to house the slightly bigger Jag pick up.

Re: New to Strats - possibly a new Strat owner soon.

Let me clarify a bit more... The Jaguar pickup has a slightly, very slightly smaller footprint than a Strat pickup, without the cover. If you wanted to use the cover, pretty sure you'd need to file the pickguard and possibly convert to direct mount because the cover on a Jaguar is built differently. If you have a single coil route that's pretty tight, you might even need to route the body to fit the cover and claw slightly though I haven't measured. But again, if you leave the cover off, you have no need to alter the pickguard or body aside from possibly the screw holes; it just screws in with the correct screw.

i have a trio of antiquity II jaguar bridge pups in a strat. i put strat covers on and they fit fine and sound great. basically i wanted flat pole antiquity II fender pups and these fit the bill

This being said, I never compared the sound of uncovered Jag & strat pickups in the same guitar. I would assume that they are really, really close.

Re: New to Strats - possibly a new Strat owner soon.

i pulled a set of surfers out of the guitar before i put the jags in. they arent identical due to different magnet stagger and the fact that there are three identical jag pups vs the neck-rw/rp middle-hot bridge of the surfer set. the strat sounds like a great strat even with the jag pups. there isnt much difference between a '62 jag pup and strat pup of the same era, same wire, same magnets similar # of turns.

the big differences in sound are due to the short scale of the jag, the trem, the jazzmaster style electronics and the claw on the pup

That's weird. I have had a variety of Jaguar pickups, Duncans, Japanese, US Fender... And standard Strat covers, the same that fit on my Duncan's and US Fender pickups, would not fit on any of them. Measuring my Jaguar pickups, the bobbin is taller, narrower, and thinner than most Strat pickups and the blueprints on the Duncan website seem to bear that out.

...Bur sound-wise? Not a difference in practical application. Except for maybe the claws.

Re: New to Strats - possibly a new Strat owner soon.

Update: My Strat covers don't fit on the Duncan Jaguar pickups, because the top bobbin is too wide (I only measured the lower bobbin before ; ) I though the reason they don't fit was pole spacing, but I guess I mis-remembered. On the other hand, they also don't fit on my Japanese Jaguar pickups; in this case the bobbin is sized correct for a Strat cover, but it is these pickups which apparently have different pole spacing, enough that covers won't fit. Japanese Strat covers might.

Some Strat covers might work with Duncans (but mine are pretty standard and not much room to play,) and some Jaguar pickup bobbins on Duncans might indeed be small enough to fit under Strat covers, but mine are not.

i can only speak of the antiquity jag pups and whatever trio of covers i threw on them. i dont remember having any issue fitting them but its good to know that it might be an issue
