New to tube amps... please advise

Re: New to tube amps... please advise

Mike D, I too have been a SS guy, until two years ago I joined a band that let me use their Mesa Boogie Trem-O-Verb half-stack, and from then on, I decided to go tube.

For what you just described, I'd suggest an Ampeg VL-503. 80's L.A. Strip glam bands is synonymous with Lee Jackson, who used to mod their JCM800s. Check out his website (www.leejackson.com) for more info on those amps.

Browse your local craigslist or eBay for those, they seem to pop up more on the East Coast than over here.

Owned a DSL 401. The overdrive channels are useless (thin, buzzy, lifeless) and it had reliability issues coming out the ass. Even after a few mods and JJs it still wasn't great.. the clean is good unless you want to crank up the gain for some bluesy overdrive - not happening. Just turns into lifeless mud.

I play similar kinda stuff and I steered well clear of the DSL after I tried one in a shop.
It just didn't sound very good to me, especially for the price.
I've got an Ashdown Fallen Angel, half the price new as the MArshall for what I think is a better tone and more features. They do have reliability issues mind.

Closed backs may be a more ideal choice, but that doesn't mean that open backs or combo cabs won't do what you want. Combos can scream :headbang:
plus its nice having an open back so you can put your stuff in it :)

I'm gonna recommend the Mesa/Boogie F-30, Rect-O-Verb, and the Marshall Jubilee combo

All are great amps, and all will do what you're lookin for in a heartbeat.

All are 1x12 open back cabs, with a second channel. I've had personal experience with the F-30 and the Rect-o-veb and I've heard nothing but amazing things about the Jubilee

There is only one I would consider- the ENGL Screamer 50. This is a fantastic amp they can get as nasty as you'd ever need plus has nice cleans.

The Orange Tiny Terror sounds interesting. I hever never tried or seen one. That may be a good one for me to checkout whan I can't fire up a head and 2X12 cab.
